Do Debts Expire After 5 Years? Understand What Really Happens with Debts Over 5 Years at Serasa and Learn How to Make a Payment.

Many people still believe in the myth that, after five years, debts at Serasa “expire” and cease to be a problem. However, this idea is far from being true. Serasa clarifies that, although debts over five years can be removed from the delinquent record, they do not disappear. Creditors can still collect these debts through legal means, and the impact on your financial history may persist. It is essential to understand what really happens after this period and how to properly handle these pending issues.

Do Debts Expire After 5 Years at Serasa?

When debts at the agency reach the five-year mark without payment, they are considered time-barred. However, it is essential to understand that this time bar on debts over 5 years does not mean that the debt disappears or is automatically forgiven.

Although they cannot be collected legally, debts at Serasa remain in the credit history.

Therefore, it is essential to keep in mind that the financial obligation still persists, even without the possibility of legal collection. In this situation, the creditor may seek ways to collect debts at Serasa, even without legal support to take the matter to court. This can affect the consumer’s relationship with the creditor, complicating future purchases with the same company.

Thus, Serasa recommends always trying to negotiate amicably to resolve debts over 5 years. This approach helps maintain financial health and avoid issues in future transactions. Settling debts is also crucial for preserving good business relations, ensuring easier negotiations and access to credit.

What Happens with Debts Over 5 Years?

When a debt reaches five years, it stops directly impacting the consumer’s Serasa Score. Although this may facilitate access to credit at other institutions, the original creditor may still maintain internal records and continue collections through extrajudicial means.

It is popularly said that debts at Serasa expire after five years, referring to the time bar. After this period, the creditor can no longer legally demand payment of the debt, resulting in the debtor’s name being removed from delinquent registries like Serasa.

Technically, the correct term for this situation is “time-barred.” A time-barred debt still exists; however, the creditor loses the right to sue the debtor. Even so, when consulting the consumer’s CPF, new creditors will not find records of this debt.

Even after the time bar, regularizing debts over 5 years may be crucial for restoring trust in the market and ensuring future financial transactions. Negotiating these pending issues not only resolves immediate problems but also reinforces long-term financial health. Thus, even if the debt is considered time-barred, resolving the situation through negotiation is a smart strategy.

How to Renegotiate When Debts at Serasa Expire?

To renegotiate, you need to access Serasa Limpa Nome or the app, enter your CPF and password, or register if you don’t have a login. Then, check your debt on the screen and click on negotiate, choose the best payment option (Pix or boleto, for example), and the number of installments, confirm the chosen conditions, and you’re done.

Serasa offers a simplified experience for debt payment, providing the barcode of the boleto after the agreement. The beneficiary can choose to receive the boleto via SMS or email and decide on the payment method, including Pix.
