The medical equipment factory of Neusoft Medical Systems will be established in Porto Belo, Santa Catarina, as the first Brazilian production unit of the Chinese company, with an initial focus on magnetic resonance imaging, an estimate of 100 direct jobs, and a commitment to allocate 5% of local revenue to research and development in the state of Santa Catarina.

The factory that the Chinese Neusoft Medical Systems intends to install in Porto Belo, on the North Coast of Santa Catarina, was announced by Governor Jorginho Mello on Monday, June 1, 2026. The project foresees an investment of R$ 250 million to establish the company’s first production unit in Brazil, initially dedicated to the manufacture of magnetic resonance imaging medical equipment.

According to the portal ND Mais, the operation was presented as a new industrial base to serve the Brazilian market and, in the future, other Latin American countries. In addition to the production of machines valued at approximately R$ 10 million each, the enterprise is expected to generate about 100 direct jobs and allocate part of its revenue to research and development in the state.

Factory in Porto Belo brings Chinese medical technology to national production

The arrival of Neusoft Medical Systems represents the establishment, on Brazilian territory, of an industrial operation focused on equipment used in imaging diagnostics. Headquartered in China, the company operates in the medical technology sector and will have its first production structure in the country in Porto Belo, a municipality located near important logistical corridors in Santa Catarina.

The announcement places Porto Belo on a new industrial route, associated not only with manufacturing but also with high-complexity medical equipment. The operation is already in the implementation phase, but the information released so far does not specify the start date of manufacturing, the expected annual volume, or the complete installation schedule.

The investment also broadens the profile of industrial projects attracted by Santa Catarina. Instead of a unit focused on large-scale consumer goods, the new factory is expected to produce high-value-added devices, intended for hospitals, clinics, and diagnostic centers that use advanced technology for imaging exams.

The choice of Porto Belo was associated by the state government with infrastructure conditions, availability of qualified professionals, and business environment. The Brazilian project will be developed in partnership with the Argentine company Dinan, which operates in the distribution of medical equipment in Latin America.

Magnetic resonance machines can be worth around R$ 10 million each

The initial focus of the factory will be the production of magnetic resonance equipment, technology used to generate detailed images of the human body without resorting to ionizing radiation. Due to their technical complexity, these devices require specialized engineering, strict production control, and teams prepared for assembly, calibration, and support.

According to data presented by the Government of Santa Catarina, each piece of equipment manufactured by the company has an average value of US$ 2.2 million, an amount indicated as equivalent to approximately R$ 10 million. The amount helps to size the profile of the operation: it is an industry with few high-value individual products, different from production lines based on large volume and lower unit price.

The production of a single machine involves technology with a direct impact on the diagnostic capacity of health services. Magnetic resonance is used in exams related to neurological structures, muscles, joints, internal organs, and different clinical investigations, according to medical needs.

Despite the relevance of the equipment for the hospital sector, the announcement did not inform how many machines are expected to come out of the unit per year or which institutions may be initially served. What was indicated is that the operation in Santa Catarina will prioritize the Brazilian market, with the prospect of expanding regional reach later.

Investment of R$ 250 million foresees about 100 direct jobs

The implementation of the factory involves an announced investment of R$ 250 million and the expectation of creating approximately 100 direct job positions. Due to the nature of the production, part of these positions is likely to be linked to technical, industrial, administrative, and operational support activities, although the detailed distribution of the positions has not yet been disclosed.

For Porto Belo and nearby municipalities, the enterprise may also increase the demand for services related to the installation of the unit, transportation, maintenance, supplies, and professional qualification. However, potential indirect jobs and additional economic effects will depend on the actual evolution of the operation and were not quantified in the announcement.

The number of direct positions is significant, but the project’s differential lies in the type of industry arriving in the state. A factory of advanced medical equipment requires technical knowledge and connection with professionals trained in engineering, technology, health, and areas supporting specialized production.

In this context, the enterprise could broaden the debate on workforce training for technological sectors in Santa Catarina. The forecast of relationships with educational institutions reinforces that the company’s arrival is not limited to the physical construction of the unit but involves the preparation of professionals for a more complex industrial segment.

Research will receive 5% of the operation’s revenue in Santa Catarina

In addition to the initial investment, Neusoft has committed to allocate 5% of the operation’s revenue to research and development in Santa Catarina. The measure foresees that part of the resources generated by industrial activity will remain linked to innovation, training, and the advancement of solutions applied to medical technology.

The project also includes the possibility of partnerships with Santa Catarina universities and state programs for professional qualification. In practice, this approach can create opportunities for academic research, technical training, and the development of knowledge related to diagnostic imaging equipment.

The revenue reserve for research is one of the points that differentiates the project from a simple assembly line. If executed as announced, the strategy could integrate production, innovation, and professional training within the state itself, bringing the industry closer to the institutions responsible for preparing new specialists.

Even so, the results will depend on the agreements that are effectively made, the prioritized study areas, and the continuity of investments after the start of the operation. So far, details about participating universities, specific projects, or innovation goals to be achieved have not been disclosed.

First Brazilian unit may serve other Latin American countries

The Porto Belo factory was designed to function as the production and operational base of Neusoft Medical Systems in Brazil. The announced strategy foresees initial service to the national market and a possible future expansion to Latin American countries, taking advantage of the partnership with Dinan and the location of the Santa Catarina unit.

This perspective places Santa Catarina in a competition for international investments associated with health and technology. By manufacturing diagnostic imaging equipment on Brazilian soil, the company starts operating closer to the country’s customers and potential regional markets, although the extent of this service still depends on the consolidation of the unit.

The project connects a Santa Catarina factory to an international chain of high-value medical equipment. For the state, the installation represents the arrival of a specialized Chinese operation; for the company, it means establishing a productive presence in a market that could serve as a platform for new business in the region.

The announcement, however, marks the beginning of a stage, not the conclusion of the enterprise. From now on, it will be necessary to monitor the implementation, the effective opening of jobs, the start of production, and the application of the promised resources for research and development.

SC receives high-value industrial project and will have to monitor its results

The installation of Neusoft Medical Systems’ first Brazilian factory in Porto Belo gathers impressive numbers: R$ 250 million in investment, equipment estimated at around R$ 10 million, approximately 100 direct jobs, and a commitment to allocate 5% of revenue to research and development in Santa Catarina.

More than announcing a new industrial unit, the project raises questions about the concrete effects of technological production in the state: how many professionals will be hired, which research will be funded, when will the equipment start being manufactured, and how far the operation can expand Santa Catarina’s role in the medical industry.

Do you believe that investments in high-tech factories can transform the economy of a city like Porto Belo, or do the results still depend on more detailed commitments and public monitoring? Leave your opinion in the comments.
