Accusations of Chinese Interference, Suspected Underwater Findings and Tension in the South China Sea Place Filipino Elections Under Strong International Attention
The Philippine government has formally accused the Chinese regime of attempting to influence the midterm elections scheduled for May 12. The allegation was made on Thursday by the National Security Council (NSC), which claims there is evidence of interference through disinformation campaigns and support for candidates aligned with Beijing’s interests.
Official Accusations in the Senate
During a hearing in the Philippine Senate, Jonathan Malaya, deputy director-general of the NSC, presented the allegations against China.
According to him, there are ongoing information operations that favor certain candidates and attack others. Malaya stated that China aims to weaken those who do not support its policies, directly interfering in the Philippine political landscape.

The representative also stated that the joint military exercises between the Philippines and the United States, known as Balikatan, have been criticized by Beijing, which classifies them as a threat to peace and regional stability.
Malaya noted that these criticisms have also been echoed by local authorities allegedly linked to the Chinese government.
Disputes in the South China Sea
The accusations of interference come at a time of rising tension in the South China Sea.
This region is considered vital due to its strategic position and natural resources, such as fishing and oil and gas reserves. It is the stage for disputes among various countries, including China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Brunei.
In recent years, confrontations between Philippine and Chinese vessels have intensified, contributing to distrust between the two nations. The territorial conflict has escalated, becoming one of the main sources of tension in the region.
Espionage and Findings at Sea
During the same Senate hearing, the Philippine Navy presented underwater drones found in the country’s territorial waters. The equipment is under investigation, and according to spokesperson Roy Vincent Trinidad, forensic examinations indicate Chinese origin.
Since the beginning of the year, the Philippines has also detained 12 Chinese nationals on suspicion of espionage. These actions have heightened concerns about attempts to gather sensitive information on Philippine territory.
Filipino Government Position
The government, led by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., takes a firm stance regarding Chinese actions. Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro defended the country’s sovereignty and stated that the three Filipino nationals detained in China have no ties to intelligence services.
Teodoro rejected the espionage allegations against Filipinos, reinforcing that there is no involvement in activities that compromise national security. The statement was made in response to China, which detained the three nationals under unspecified suspicions.
Elections Under International Surveillance
The midterm elections in the Philippines, scheduled for May 12, occur in a tense atmosphere. Allegations of foreign interference and cases of espionage have increased international scrutiny of the electoral process.
Philippine authorities claim to be on alert and monitoring for potential attempts at external influence. The episode reinforces the challenges faced by the country in defending its sovereignty amid increasingly evident geopolitical disputes.
