Built Over 11 Years Starting in 1969, the Longest Residential Building in the World Measures Almost 3 Kilometers in Total Length, Bringing Together More Than 3,000 Apartments, About 10,000 Residents, and Has Had for More Than Four Decades an Unrivaled Architectural Record
The longest residential building in the world, known as the Great Wall of China, has almost 3 kilometers in total length, houses more than 3,000 apartments and about 10,000 residents, establishing itself as the largest continuous housing structure ever built, located in the western part of Ukraine.
Construction Began in 1969 and Was Completed After 11 Years
The construction of the building began in 1969, during the Soviet period, at the intersection of Sobornosti Avenue and Molodezhy Street. The works were only completed 11 years later, an unusual timeframe for residential buildings, reflecting the complexity and scale of the project.
The project was envisioned by architects RG Metelnitsky and VK Malovitsa. At the time of its completion, it became the longest residential building in the Soviet Union, a position it maintained for more than four decades, with no other continuous residential construction surpassing its dimensions.

Total Dimensions Reach Almost 3 Kilometers in Length
Although the main axis of the structure is 1.75 kilometers long, the adjacent extensions add over one kilometer to the total layout. Considering the entire complex, the building approaches 3 kilometers in linear extension.
From ground level, the true size of the building is hard to perceive. From an aerial view, the beehive-like shape becomes evident. It is estimated that an average person takes about an hour to walk from one end to the other at a normal pace.
Structure Houses a Population Comparable to That of Small Cities
The complex has hundreds of entrances, tens of thousands of windows, and over 3,000 residential units. With approximately 10,000 residents, the building surpasses, in population, many small cities around the world.
Due to its scale, the first residents reported difficulties in locating their own apartments in the early weeks after moving in. The issue led to the creation of a specific addressing system for each section, facilitating internal orientation.
War, Need for Repairs, and Attempts at Preservation
Although located far from the front lines of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, the region faces a constant threat of shelling. According to local press reports, the building urgently requires structural repairs, but obtaining resources is limited in wartime.
As an alternative, a local travel agency developed a plan to fund the repairs through organizing guided tours and events on the rooftop of the building. The initiative aims to preserve the gigantic residential complex, considered an intriguing modern curiosity even among architects.
