Discover the Journey of BYD Dolphin in Brazil, the Best-Selling Electric Car That Boosted Electric Mobility in the Country and Became a Symbol of the Green Revolution in Transportation.

The transformation of the global automotive industry is underway, and Brazil has been a timid spectator of this electric revolution for many years. But everything began to change with the arrival of a compact, innovative, and 100% electric model: the BYD Dolphin, now considered the best-selling electric car in Brazil. Launched discreetly, the model from Chinese automaker BYD (Build Your Dreams) initially went unnoticed by much of the public, but eventually became a symbol of green mobility in the country.

While traditional giants were still making conservative bets on hybrids or ethanol, BYD surprised everyone by launching an affordable electric vehicle with cutting-edge technology, competitive range, and modern design — elements that quickly won over the market. Today, the BYD Dolphin in Brazil is established as a reference for electric mobility in Brazil, raising the bar for national automotive innovation.

Today, we will analyze the model’s journey, its importance in the sustainable mobility landscape, official market data, onboard technology, and the impact it has been causing in the automotive sector.

The Discreet Start of BYD Dolphin in Brazil

Officially launched in Brazil in 2023, the BYD Dolphin arrived during a timid transition to electric vehicles. That year, the country still had an extremely small fleet of 100% electric cars, concentrated in large urban centers and with high prices.

However, BYD dared. They brought the Dolphin with a competitive price range between R$ 149 thousand and R$ 180 thousand, placing it well below direct competitors such as the Renault Kwid E-Tech and the Mini Cooper SE. Even so, it was overlooked by much of the media and the general public, who still viewed electric vehicles as “things of the future.”

But the company already had a solid strategy: to popularize electric mobility with proprietary technology and local manufacturing.

The Turning Point: BYD Dolphin Becomes the Best-Selling Electric Car

In 2024, the scene shifted drastically. According to data from the Brazilian Electric Vehicle Association (ABVE) and Fenabrave, the BYD Dolphin ended the year as the best-selling electric car in Brazil, surpassing established brands and helping to double the volume of electric vehicle sales compared to the previous year.

Official Data:

  • More than 12 thousand units sold in 2024 (according to ABVE);
  • 387% growth in electric vehicle sales between 2023 and 2024;
  • BYD leading the segment with over 40% market share in BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicles).

The success of the Dolphin can be attributed to three main factors:

  • Affordable price, within what is expected for an entry-level electric vehicle;
  • High energy efficiency and range of over 290 km (PBEV cycle);
  • Cutting-edge technology, such as Blade lithium-iron-phosphate batteries, fast charging, and an intelligent multimedia system.

The BYD Dolphin is built on the innovative e-Platform 3.0, exclusive for electric vehicles, which ensures:

  • Ideal weight distribution (50/50);
  • Greater structural safety;
  • Superior energy efficiency.

Technical Specifications:

  • Electric motor from 95 to 204 hp, depending on the version;
  • Blade battery of 44.9 kWh or 60.48 kWh;
  • Range between 291 km and 427 km, depending on the version and usage;
  • DC charging up to 60 kW, completing from 30% to 80% in less than 30 minutes;
  • Maximum speed limited to 160 km/h.

In addition, the model offers features such as:

  • Adaptive cruise control;
  • Front collision warning;
  • Lane-keeping assist;
  • 12.8” touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity.

Electric Mobility in Brazil: The Role of BYD

The advancement of Dolphin boosted the entire structure of BYD in Brazil. In 2023, the automaker announced the construction of an industrial complex in Camaçari (BA), where it plans to manufacture electric cars locally starting in 2025. The investment exceeds R$ 3 billion and is expected to generate over 5,000 direct and indirect jobs.

In addition, the company:

  • Installs its own charging stations;
  • Participates in bus electrification projects;
  • Supplies batteries and solar panels for large networks.

BYD’s business model integrates mobility and clean energy solutions, positioning Brazil as a strategic hub for the brand in Latin America.

Sustainability: The Environmental Impact of BYD Dolphin

The BYD Dolphin directly contributes to:

  • Reduction of CO₂ emissions (zero direct emissions);
  • Lower consumption of natural resources (does not use fossil fuels);
  • Less noise pollution, ideal for urban centers;
  • Reduction in maintenance and operating costs.

According to the Ministry of Mines and Energy, an average electric car consumes, on average, three times less energy per kilometer than a combustion car. At the same time, Brazilian electricity has an 87% renewable matrix, making its use even more sustainable.

Market Reaction and Competition

After the success of Dolphin, other automakers began to accelerate their launches. Renault, GWM, Caoa Chery, and even Volkswagen announced affordable electric versions to compete with the Chinese car. However, up to now, none have managed to replicate the balance between cost, efficiency, and technology that BYD offered.

Additionally, the Dolphin opened the way for new models from BYD itself, such as:

  • BYD Dolphin Plus (more powerful and sophisticated version);
  • BYD Seal (sport sedan);
  • BYD Yuan Plus (electric SUV).

The Consumer Changed: Who Buys the Dolphin?

A survey conducted in 2024 by Bright Consulting, in partnership with Serasa Experian, indicated that buyers of the BYD Dolphin in Brazil are:

  • Mostly young (25 to 45 years old);
  • With a profile of conscious and technological consumption;
  • Interested in reducing long-term costs;
  • Located mainly in capitals and metropolitan areas.

The model has also become popular among fleet operators and app drivers, thanks to operational savings and low cost per kilometer traveled.

Challenges for Electric Mobility in Brazil

Despite the success of Dolphin, Brazil still faces challenges that prevent a faster expansion of electric vehicles:

  • Low charging network on highways;
  • Lack of federal tax incentives for 100% pure electric vehicles;
  • High initial acquisition cost, even for more affordable models;
  • Little technical knowledge among the population regarding maintenance and use.

However, states like São Paulo, Paraná, Espírito Santo, and Rio Grande do Sul already offer exemptions from IPVA and licensing for electric vehicles, which regionally boosts demand.

What began as a bold bet has become a turning point in the Brazilian automotive sector. The BYD Dolphin redefined the concept of an affordable electric car, proving that innovation can indeed be popular and financially viable.

In just a few years, the Dolphin transformed from an “ignored car” to a symbol of electric mobility in Brazil, being used as a reference even by public agencies, automotive magazines, and engineering forums.

More than just a car, the Dolphin is a landmark in the national energy transition, finally placing Brazil on the global map of green mobility.
