In a Surprising Turn of Events, GM Announced the Hiring of 200 Employees to Reactivate the Second Shift of S10 Production in São José dos Campos, Interior of São Paulo.
Did You Know? General Motors (GM), one of the largest automakers in the world, has just surprised the Brazilian automotive market with an unexpected announcement that promises to boost the local economy and bring relief to hundreds of families.
But what motivated this decision that could change the course of the industry in São José dos Campos (SP)? The truth is that GM, after facing a period of uncertainties and drastic cuts, is about to reactivate an important production line that had been deactivated, paving the way for the hiring of new employees. But this story goes beyond numbers and dates.
Resumption of Production and Hirings
According to the Metalworkers’ Union of São José dos Campos and Region, General Motors (GM) is preparing to resume the second shift of S10 production, which has been interrupted since October 2023.

The measure involves the hiring of 200 new employees, an initiative that aims not only to increase daily production but also to strengthen the local economy by generating new jobs at a crucial time.
The hirings are expected to take place in October 2024 and will be valid for one year, with the possibility of extension for another year. All new hires will have rights and benefits equal to those of permanent employees, ensuring job stability and security.
Impact on Production
The plant in São José dos Campos, where the S10 and Trailblazer vehicles are manufactured, currently produces about 170 units per day. With the resumption of the second shift, that number is expected to increase to 176 vehicles daily.
In addition to expanding production, the hiring of new employees also represents a victory for the Metalworkers’ Union, which has long fought for the maintenance and creation of jobs in the region.
According to Renato Almeida, secretary-general of the Union, “the opening of more job positions and the second shift in the production line of the S10 is essential to boost employment and strengthen the local economy. This is a cause that the Union has always defended.”
Turnaround After Layoffs
However, the current scenario contrasts sharply with the events of 2023, when GM faced a turbulent period marked by mass layoffs. In October of that year, the company laid off employees through telegrams and emails, resulting in a 17-day strike in São José dos Campos.
The crisis led to the temporary suspension of contracts and voluntary layoffs, affecting about 1,200 workers. The automaker, according to Union information, had started sending layoff telegrams as early as May 2023, resulting in the departure of approximately 50 employees who were on paid leave.
This difficult moment left deep scars in the local community, but GM’s recent decision seems to signal a recovery and renewal of hope.
Assembly and Next Steps
To clarify the details of the new hiring, the Metalworkers’ Union will call an assembly with workers in the coming days.
The expectation is that this meeting will serve to align the employees’ expectations and clarify doubts about the selection process and the rights of new hires.
This initiative reinforces the importance of dialogue between the company and its employees, something that proved fundamental during the conflicts of 2023.
The New Phase of GM in São José dos Campos
GM’s announcement marks the beginning of a new phase for the automaker in São José dos Campos. The resumption of the second shift of S10 production not only reflects a strategy to increase competitiveness in the Brazilian market but also demonstrates the company’s commitment to the economic development of the region.
With 3,150 workers, General Motors’ factory in São José dos Campos is preparing for a promising future, where increased production and job creation can serve as an example for other industrial plants in Brazil.
