Transition to new National Identity Card advances in the country while Brazilians still use old RG models, which will lose official validity until 2032 and will be replaced by a unified document with a single CPF, a digital version integrated into Gov.br, and new security mechanisms.

The old RG will remain valid in Brazil until February 28, 2032, but will be replaced by the National Identity Card, the CIN, the new official civil identification standard that uses the CPF as a unique number throughout the country.

The change does not require immediate replacement for all Brazilians, but establishes a transition period for citizens to seek out the identification agencies in the states and the Federal District before the national deadline.

New National Identity Card will have a single CPF

The National Identity Card was created to replace the old state RG numbers, which could vary according to the federative unit responsible for issuing the document.

With the CIN, the CPF becomes the national identification record, which reduces duplications, facilitates cross-referencing of registrations, and increases security in public and private services.

The new model also brings together verification elements that did not exist in the traditional RG, such as a secure QR Code and an automated reading zone, a feature similar to that used in travel documents.

Deadline for replacing the old RG is already set

According to official guidelines from the federal government, old model identity documents remain valid until February 28, 2032, provided they are in good condition and allow the holder to be identified.

In practice, this means that citizens do not need to rush to replace their RG now, but should follow the rules of the state where they live, as issuance is carried out by local identification institutes.

Despite the long deadline, torn, improperly laminated, very old documents, or those with a photo that no longer represents the current appearance, may be refused in specific situations before 2032.

Document will have a digital version integrated into Gov.br

The CIN is issued in physical format and can also be accessed in the Gov.br application after the citizen receives the printed copy, functioning similarly to the digital version of the CNH.

The first paper copy is free, as is the digital version, while issuance on a polycarbonate card is optional and may have a fee defined by each state.

In addition to the CPF, the document can gather other citizen data, depending on availability and issuance rules, but the inclusion of this information does not automatically replace all documents used for specific purposes.

Who needs to replace the RG with the new identity

All Brazilians who still use the old RG must migrate to the National Identity Card by 2032, except in situations where the validity is indefinite according to the age group provided in official regulations.

The new CIN is valid for five years for children under 12, ten years for people aged 12 to under 60, and for an indefinite period for those over 60.

The government reported in February 2026 that the new card had already reached 45 million issuances in the country, a number that shows progress in adoption, but still leaves a large part of the population outside the new national standard.

How to issue the new National Identity Card

Issuance must be requested at the identification agencies of the states and the Federal District, usually by appointment and presentation of a birth or marriage certificate, as applicable.

After receiving the physical copy, the citizen can access the digital version via Gov.br, provided that the data is correctly registered and the account allows for document validation.

The CIN can also be used as a travel document in countries with international agreements with Brazil, such as Mercosul members, but it does not replace a passport in destinations that require this document.
