Man Discovers 18th Century Chinese Porcelain Bought for Almost Nothing, About to Be Auctioned for a Fortune

A curious discovery in the world of antiques is about to yield a significant sum of money for American John Carcerano. In a modest thrift store in Illinois, United States, Carcerano acquired a plate for only US$ 4.99 (around R$ 30). Little did he know that the rare piece he had just acquired was an 18th century Chinese porcelain valued at up to US$ 6,000 (approximately R$ 28,000).

From Thrift Store Shelf to Auction

Carcerano, with over 35 years of experience in buying and selling antiques, intensified his visits to local thrift stores after facing health problems in 2023 that kept him away from work for eight months. “The strategy is to be present when the carts are placed on the shelves, as the best pieces are often taken quickly,” Carcerano shared.

The valuable piece remained hidden under a modern plate until its discovery in October.

The Surprising Origin of the Rare Piece

Research revealed that the porcelain is a “Chinese export heraldrical chamfered rectangular tray” from the Qianlong period of the Qing dynasty, dated around 1755.

Decorated with the crest of Mendes da Costa, the piece is one of the few that have been sold in the last 50 years.

An expert from the renowned auction house Sotheby’s, among other establishments, confirmed its authenticity, describing it as highly valuable.

The Auction and Sales Expectations

Carcerano’s discovery is scheduled to be auctioned at Sotheby’s in New York in June.

With an estimated value between US$ 4,000 and US$ 6,000, the piece represents a rare opportunity in the antiques market.

Carcerano used Google Lens to quickly verify the potential value of the item, finding references to previous sales in the range of US$ 4,400 (around R$ 26,000).

The Antiques Scene and the Thrift Market

For Carcerano, the proximity of the thrift store to the wealthy suburbs north of Chicago increases his chances of finding valuable items.

His frequent visits to the location demonstrate that, with patience and determination, it is possible to find true treasures. “Sometimes, you need to dig a little deeper, but the rewards can be significant,” he stated, highlighting the importance of always being alert for unique opportunities in the antiques and thrift markets.

This story not only highlights the incredible discoveries that can be made in thrift stores, but also reinforces the rich heritage of rare pieces of Chinese porcelain that still fascinate collectors and enthusiasts around the world.
