In Palmas, Retiree Finds R$ 59.9 Thousand Hidden in New House Yard and Calls the Police
The public servant retiree Raimundo Soares Sobrinho experienced an unusual situation in Palmas, Tocantins, last year. While cleaning the yard of the purchased house, he found a hidden ice cream container behind some bushes. Inside, there was R$ 59.9 thousand in R$ 100 and R$ 50 bills.
The money was inside a black bag and carefully stored in the container, which remained hidden in the garden. When he noticed what he had found, Raimundo became nervous and decided to call the police.
“I just took off the lid, when I noticed it was money, I covered it back up and put it in the same spot. Then, I returned the container to the same place and contacted the police, precisely so they could investigate where this money came from,” explained Raimundo.

The House Bought for the Daughter
The property was purchased by Raimundo with the intention of having his daughter live in Palmas. “She (the daughter) went to spend a day at my house in Itacajá (TO), the city where I live. And yesterday I dropped her off, and when the sun came up early in the morning, I went to clean this small garden that is here in front,” he reported in an interview with G1.
Since the purchase, the daughter has been living in the residence. Raimundo stated that he had contact with the previous owner only on the day of the signature of the property transfer documents.
Even with the large sum found, Raimundo said he had no doubts about what to do. “It’s because the money is not mine […] It doesn’t matter the amount, it just doesn’t belong to me,” he declared.
The Civil Police of Tocantins were called and registered the occurrence, accounting for R$ 59.9 thousand. The amount was sent for examination, according to the Public Security Secretariat (SSP).
