Sustainable property in Colorado combines recycled materials, artisanal construction, rural area, and energy efficiency solutions in a property that caught the attention of the American real estate market for the method used in the construction.

A sustainable house built with recycled tires, clay, aluminum cans, and glass bottles was put up for sale in Colorado Springs, in the American state of Colorado.

The property is located in the Black Forest region, on a plot of 6.81 acres, equivalent to about 2.76 hectares, and was initially listed for US$ 1,299,900.

In real estate listings consulted in June 2026, the price appeared reduced to US$ 1,274,900.

Sustainable house in Colorado Springs

Located at 8020 Toltec Lane, the residence was completed in 1997 and has 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, and 4,461 square feet of built area, approximately 414 square meters.

According to realtor Jennifer Browne, from The Fletcher Team & Associates, the owners bought the land in 1994 and spent about three years building the house.

According to her, 90% of the work was done by the couple.

The project follows a proposal of an “earth home,” a term used for houses that use earth and thermal mass as part of the structure and temperature control.

Browne stated to real estate sector outlets that the walls are between 2 and 2.5 feet thick and were made with tires filled with clay.

The construction also reportedly used about 11,000 aluminum cans in parts of the structure.

The residence was designed to maintain the internal temperature close to 65 °F throughout the year, equivalent to about 18 °C, according to the realtor.

This feature is attributed to the use of materials with high thermal mass and the design of the construction, which combines passive and active solar utilization solutions.

Recycled tires, clay, and bottles in the structure

More than 1,500 recycled tires were incorporated into the structure, alongside clay, glass bottles, and aluminum cans.

The combination of reused materials is one of the central elements of the project and helps explain why the house began to circulate in real estate publications in the United States as an example of sustainable housing made in an artisanal way.

In addition to the structure made with recycled materials, the house includes passive and active solar systems, inclined windows on the facade, five skylights, stucco exterior, and EPDM membrane roofing, a type of synthetic rubber used in roofs.

According to the listing description, some windows have rain sensors and can be controlled by phone.

Inside, the residence maintains the same construction language linked to natural materials.

There are exposed wooden beams, ceilings with large logs, built-in benches, kiva-style fireplaces, and an open plan that connects living areas, kitchen, and circulation spaces.

The floor is made of molded earth, an element that is part of the house’s original proposal and requires specific maintenance.

Internal environments and handcrafted details

The decorative part was also made with customized elements.

The property has mosaics, 12 mandalas, and an entry piece that functions as a water element.

According to Browne, the mosaics were completed shortly before the property was put up for sale, on April 29, 2026.

The realtor reported that the mandalas represent the months of the year and were conceived by the owners as part of the residence’s visual concept.

The master suite has two closets, a bathroom with a stone-covered bathtub, and direct access to an outdoor patio.

The house also features a kitchen divided between preparation area, pantry, and dining space.

Two rooms classified as “non-conforming” in the real estate description have exclusive access to private observatories, according to the listing data.

Land of almost 7 acres in Black Forest

On the outside, the land gathers structures aimed at rural use and property maintenance.

The area includes a two-car garage, fenced spaces, horse facilities, storage sheds, a fenced area for dogs, and a pond.

More recent real estate sources describe the barn as a structure with two to three stalls and space for hay, as well as a heated shelter for riding equipment with water access.

The lot of almost 7 acres is set back from the street and offers available area for different uses, according to the commercial description of the property.

The realtor stated that the property may interest buyers looking for a primary residence, vacation home, retreat space, or property aimed at experience rentals, provided local use and occupancy rules are observed.

Browne told the New York Post that the next buyer tends to be someone who wants to feel connected to nature.

“It will be someone who is looking for an experience to feel more part of the earth,” stated the broker.

The statement was made when commenting on the profile of interested parties who, according to her, might be attracted by the house’s proposal.

Maintenance requires specific care

Maintenance, however, follows different care than that required by conventional properties.

The broker explained to real estate outlets that the clay walls should not be cleaned with a damp cloth, because water can stain or damage the surface.

The guidance she passed on is to remove dust with a broom or dry cleaning.

The molded earth floor also needs to be oiled frequently to preserve the finish, according to information attributed to the broker.

This type of detail shows that the house was not only designed as a sustainable property but as a construction that depends on care compatible with the materials used in its structure.

According to Browne, the owners decided to sell because they are retiring.

After almost three decades in the property, they are looking to pass it on to a buyer willing to maintain the original proposal of the construction.

The broker stated that the interest in the house was above what she expected, due to the unusual characteristics in the local real estate market.

Property draws attention for its construction method

The residence was mentioned in industry publications in the United States for its combination of alternative techniques, reuse of materials, and handcrafted finish.

The asking price, the land size, and the way the house was built help explain the impact of the listing, especially among readers interested in sustainable architecture and non-traditional properties.
