Cybertruck Owners Face Negative Surprise: Tires Don’t Last Long, Are Expensive, and Require Frequent Replacements After Few Kilometers

Upon seeing the Tesla Cybertruck up close for the first time, one thing stands out: its size. For those under 1.70 meters tall, the tires reach up to their waist. The vehicle is 1,800 mm tall and has a ground clearance of 406 mm, making it difficult to see inside the cabin.

But it’s not just the size that is catching attention. Owners who decided to keep the car for longer are discovering an unexpected problem: tire durability. Many report that the tires last just over 11,000 kilometers before needing replacement.

Expensive Tires and Accelerated Wear

From the factory, the Cybertruck may come with two types of tires: the Pirelli Scorpion ATR or the Goodyear Wrangler Territory RT.

Both are sized 285/65R20, which represents 285 mm in width and a diameter of 20 inches (approx. 51 cm). They are large tires, and the weight of the truck — which exceeds three tons — does not help.

Some users claim they had to replace the tires with less than 11,200 km. Others report even less: about 10,000 km.

This is concerning, especially due to the cost. Each original tire costs approximately US$ 500, not including labor. Thus, a complete replacement can exceed US$ 2,000 (around R$ 11,300.00 at current exchange rates).

Exclusive Design Makes Saving Difficult

Tesla developed the original tires to work in conjunction with the Cybertruck’s exclusive aerodynamic wheel covers. This specificity adds to the cost of the item. Although there are cheaper options on the market, not all are compatible with the truck’s design.

The Cybertruck leaves the factory with 20-inch (approx. 51 cm) wheels in most versions, but there are models that go up to 30 inches (0.76 m). The type of steering, driving style, and road conditions also directly affect tire durability.

Tesla Recognizes Variations in Performance

According to Tesla, tire performance varies greatly with use. On a test track, a tire with a wear index of 150 lasts 1.5 times longer than one with an index of 100. However, in practice, the outcome can be quite different.

The company also emphasizes that factors such as weather, maintenance, and driving habits play a direct role. High temperatures, for example, accelerate deterioration. And with such a large and heavy vehicle, this detail weighs heavily — including on the wallet.
