A wooden bridge inaugurated in Formosa da Serra Negra, Maranhão, became the target of criticism on social media after images of the delivery began to circulate. The structure, presented by the city hall as an improvement for rural communities, was nicknamed by internet users as a “medieval bridge” due to its rustic appearance.

The case gained even more attention because posts about the episode mentioned a market reference: bidding packages for the reconstruction and renovation of similar wooden structures in the region usually range between R$ 250,000 and R$ 330,000 per lot or project, depending on the extent of the mesostructure and the need for concrete abutments.

Although the exact value of the bridge shown in the video has not been confirmed by an official source, the association with figures close to R$ 300,000 increased the pressure on the municipal administration. According to Farol da Bahia, the delivery made by Mayor Juceni Oliveira Silva generated a strong reaction on social media.

In the released images, the mayor appears celebrating the delivery of the bridge and stating that the work would serve communities such as Belo Horizonte, Areia, Formosa Velha, Riachão, and other localities in the municipality.

The structure appears assembled in wood, with a simple aspect and finish that immediately caught attention. The contrast between the discourse of progress and commitment and the appearance of the bridge provoked criticism from users who considered the delivery disproportionate to the celebratory tone.

The irony gained strength on social media. For part of the public, the bridge seemed more like an improvised solution than a public work capable of symbolizing local development.

Reference of up to R$ 330,000 amplifies the controversy

The most sensitive point of the discussion was the value. There is no official confirmation that the viralized bridge cost R$ 300,000, but the reference to similar projects in the range of R$ 250,000 to R$ 330,000 increased the repercussion.

The information raised an inevitable question among internet users: could a structure with that appearance be part of a project worth hundreds of thousands of reais?

Even without proof of specific cost, the comparison increased the demands on bidding, execution of the work, quality of materials, and technical supervision. The case came to be seen not just as a rural delivery but as an example of how small projects can generate significant political wear.

Structure safety becomes a target of questioning

Besides the price, the safety of the bridge entered the center of the debate. Users questioned whether the structure would have enough resistance to support vehicles, heavy rains, and daily use by rural residents.

In remote communities, bridges of this type can be essential for access to schools, health centers, commerce, and production areas. Therefore, any doubt about stability or durability gains immediate weight.

The demands on social media focused on objective questions: who approved the work, what technical criteria were used, and what is the real capacity of the bridge?

Wooden bridge is still common in rural areas

Despite the criticisms, wooden bridges are still used in many municipalities in the interior of Brazil. They often appear on rural roads, crossings over streams, and regions where the construction of larger structures requires more time and investment.

The problem, in this case, was the combination of rudimentary appearance, official disclosure, and possible association with high values. The bridge could even solve a local need, but the video sparked a negative perception outside the community served.

The repercussion showed that, on social media, a simple work can be interpreted as a symbol of outdated infrastructure, especially when presented as a major administrative achievement.

Tragedy between Maranhão and Tocantins made the topic more sensitive

The discussion also gained weight because Maranhão was recently marked by the collapse of the bridge between Estreito, in Maranhão, and Aguiarnópolis, in Tocantins, in December 2024. The tragedy left dead and missing and increased the demand for maintenance and supervision of road structures.

After an episode of this magnitude, images of seemingly fragile bridges tend to provoke an even more intense reaction. The public began to observe crossing works with greater distrust, especially when there are doubts about quality and durability.

In the case of Formosa da Serra Negra, the bridge ceased to be just a municipal delivery and became a topic of debate about safety, priority in the use of public resources, and transparency in rural works.

Repercussion exposes wear for municipal management

The city hall tried to present the bridge as a sign of work reaching the communities. However, the reaction on social media shifted the focus of the delivery and put the management under pressure.

The episode began to circulate as an example of questioned public work, with criticisms of the structure’s standard and the way the inauguration was publicized. The mention of similar projects that could reach close to R$ 300,000 added an even more explosive component to the controversy.

Amidst ironies and demands, the so-called “medieval bridge” ended up becoming a symbol of distrust over simple works, high costs, and lack of clear explanations to the citizen.
