Health reinforces appeal for Brazilians to update measles vaccination before the 2026 World Cup, given the increase in cases in the United States, Mexico, and Canada and the risk of reintroducing the virus in Brazil.

Health has entered a state of alert for Brazilian travelers intending to attend the FIFA World Cup 2026 matches in the host countries. The Ministry of Health published recommendations for those traveling to the United States, Mexico, and Canada, advising them to check and update their vaccination records before departure, amidst ongoing measles outbreaks in the three nations.

The alert gains strength because Brazil has registered only two measles cases in 2026 and remains free from endemic circulation of the disease. Precisely for this reason, the concern now is to prevent the virus from re-entering the country through international travel. The main strategy to avoid this scenario continues to be vaccination, highlighted by the ministry as the most important measure to reduce the risk of infection and contain a potential reintroduction.

Health places vaccination at the center of preparations for the 2026 World Cup

The Ministry of Health’s guidance directly targets Brazilians planning to travel to watch the 2026 World Cup matches. The recommendation is clear: check vaccination status and update the schedule before the trip, respecting the necessary deadlines to ensure adequate protection.

This movement happens because the tournament will be held precisely in countries facing active measles circulation. With a large flow of tourists and international travel, Health treats vaccine updates as an essential step in travel preparation, just like passports, accommodation, and logistics.

The measles scenario in the countries hosting the tournament

Health warns about measles: vaccination before the World Cup helps Brazil prevent the reintroduction of the virus.

The numbers from the host countries help explain why the alert was issued early. In Canada, 2025 ended with 5,062 measles cases, a situation that led the country to lose its disease-free status. In 2026, 871 cases have already been recorded, with continuous transmission.

In Mexico, the escalation was even more significant. After registering only 7 cases in 2024, the country accumulated 6,152 occurrences in 2025 and already has 9,207 records in 2026. The United States, meanwhile, recorded 2,144 cases in 2025 and another 1,738 this year. The magnitude of these numbers has transformed traveler vaccination into a strategically important public health measure.

The numbers that explain why Brazil is trying to act proactively

Brazil is experiencing a very different situation from that observed in the World Cup host countries. In 2026, only two measles cases were registered in national territory, both unrelated to each other. The contrast with data from the United States, Mexico, and Canada reinforces why Health is trying to act before the virus regains ground in the country.

This difference also helps to show the role of vaccination. While outbreaks are advancing in countries that will host the tournament, Brazil maintains control of the disease and preserves its sanitary status. The challenge now is to prevent this situation from changing given the anticipated increase in the international circulation of people.

The two cases registered in Brazil in 2026

The first confirmed case in Brazil occurred in São Paulo, involving a six-month-old child residing in the northern zone of the capital. There was a recent travel history to La Paz, Bolivia, a country facing an active outbreak of the disease. In response, a vaccination blockade was carried out in the region, with over 600 doses administered.

The second case was confirmed in Rio de Janeiro. The patient is a 22-year-old woman, with no vaccination record, who works in a hotel in the city. After confirmation, investigation and blockade vaccination measures were adopted at her residence, workplace, and also at the healthcare service related to her care.

What changes in practice for travelers

In practice, the main change for travelers is the need to prioritize vaccination before departure. Children, adolescents, and adults must follow the recommendations of the National Vaccination Calendar and check if their vaccination schedule is complete within the appropriate timeframe.

Additionally, the guidance is to be attentive to symptoms during or after international travel. Fever, red skin spots, runny nose, and conjunctivitis are among the signs that require attention. When seeking care, travelers should inform their travel history, which helps accelerate the investigation and response of health teams.

Why Brazil’s status has not yet changed

Despite the two confirmed cases this year, Brazil remains free from endemic measles circulation. This means that the records identified so far have not changed the country’s status, precisely because there has been no reestablishment of continuous transmission of the disease within national territory.

This point is important because it shows that the surveillance system continues to operate with response capacity. Rapid case identification and the adoption of vaccine blockade helped contain the episodes without altering the country’s general health situation.

Health relies on surveillance and rapid response to prevent reintroduction

The Ministry of Health emphasizes that maintaining this status depends on two main fronts: high vaccination coverage and immediate response to suspected cases. Among the measures cited are rapid notification, timely investigation, contact monitoring, and expansion of vaccination strategies.

This set of actions shows that protection does not depend only on those who travel. The surveillance structure also needs to remain active to track potential occurrences, interrupt transmission chains, and prevent imported cases from paving the way for a new advance of the virus within the country.

The vaccine remains free and available nationwide

The measles vaccine remains available free of charge at SUS units throughout Brazil. This point is central because it eliminates one of the main barriers to access and reinforces that prevention is within reach of the population before the increase in international flow caused by the World Cup.

With the event approaching and ongoing outbreaks in host countries, updating the vaccination card is no longer just a generic recommendation and now functions as a concrete measure of individual and collective protection. This is what makes vaccination one of the main health fronts for the coming months.

Why the alert goes beyond travel and affects the entire country

The alert does not only concern fans who intend to go to the games. When Health tries to prevent the reintroduction of measles, it is trying to protect the entire Brazilian population from a disease that has already been controlled in the country, but which continues to circulate strongly in other parts of the continent.

That’s why the recommendation carries more weight than a simple warning for travelers. It functions as a preventive measure to preserve Brazil’s current scenario, prevent imported cases from escalating, and avoid the country facing a problem that is currently contained.

Do you think vaccination for those going to the 2026 World Cup should become an immediate priority to prevent measles from circulating again in Brazil?
