Beijing Reinforces Opposition To Unilateralism And Highlights Importance Of Cooperation With Mexico

China challenged the Mexican government’s proposal to increase tariffs starting in 2026.
This position was taken on August 28, 2025.
Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Guo Jiakun, advocated for inclusive economic globalization that is beneficial for all.
The statement arose in response to the Mexican plan to adopt tariff measures targeting Chinese products.

Importance Of Trade Partnership Between China And Mexico

According to Guo Jiakun, Mexico ranks second among China’s largest trading partners in Latin America.
Furthermore, China is the third largest destination for Mexican exports.
As such, both consider the bilateral relationship strategic and advantageous.
The spokesperson emphasized that cooperation between the two nations is fundamental for regional stability and balance in international trade.

Motivations Of The Mexican Government To Raise Tariffs

The plan to increase tariffs is part of Mexico’s budget proposal.
It aims to protect domestic companies from competition from imported products at reduced prices.
Additionally, it seeks to address longstanding pressures from the United States, which demands stricter measures against the entry of Chinese goods.
Bloomberg reported the information and reinforced the direct impact that the measure may have on the bilateral relationship.

China’s Position Against Unilateralism And Protectionism

The Chinese spokesperson highlighted that Beijing opposes any form of unilateralism, protectionism, and discriminatory practices.
For China, policies of this nature weaken the global economy and harm international integration.
For this reason, the country reaffirms its commitment to economic openness and trade practices that benefit all parties involved.

Expectations About Mexico’s Future Stance

In closing his statement, Guo Jiakun emphasized that Beijing believes in Mexico’s political independence.
According to him, there is confidence that the country will handle relevant issues appropriately.
Thus, the Chinese expectation is that cooperation will continue to prevail, even amid tensions caused by the potential tariff increase in 2026.
For Chinese diplomacy, the stability of bilateral trade relations is essential for ensuring shared prosperity.
