Even With Competition From Popular Veterans, A Compact Model From Volkswagen Surprises and Takes The Lead in Sales in The Country, Displacing Traditional Favorites From The Market and Indicating A Change in Behavior of Brazilian Consumers in The Entry-Level and SUVs Segment.

The Volkswagen Polo reached the top of the sales ranking for cars and light commercial vehicles in April 2025, surpassing the Fiat Strada in the month for the first time.

The lead was contested until the last moment, with the Polo achieving 10,932 registrations, just 856 units ahead of the Strada, which recorded 10,076 sales.

This result marks a significant change in the Brazilian automotive market, which has been experiencing fluctuations in consumer preferences.

According to data released by Bright Consulting last Friday (2), the Polo managed to consolidate its strong performance since the first half of the month, securing its prominent position in the market.

It was the first time in 2025 that the Fiat Strada lost the monthly lead, highlighting the fierce competition among popular models.

While the Volkswagen Polo shone at the top of the list, Chevrolet also had good news with the Onix, which reached third place, marking 8,652 units sold.

However, April was not only about good news.

The Tracker, Chevrolet’s compact SUV, suffered a significant drop in the ranking, falling to lower positions among SUVs.

The Fiat Argo, which had been on the podium for several months, maintained fourth place, with 8,444 units registered.

In fifth place, the Volkswagen T-Cross appeared as the fifth best-selling model, while also maintaining its lead in the SUV ranking, with 8,109 units.

However, Hyundai’s performance was concerning.

The HB20, traditionally one of the best-selling cars in Brazil, did not manage to surpass the 5,000 unit mark in April and ended the month as the tenth best-selling model, with 4,939 registrations.

The Creta, another highlight model from Hyundai, also did not achieve good results, falling to 11th place, with 4,900 units sold.

The decline of Hyundai models reflects a trend of declining sales for the brand, which narrowly avoided falling out of the “top 10” in April.

The Rise of SUVs

The SUV market also showed interesting movements.

The Volkswagen T-Cross remained the leader among SUVs, but the Toyota Corolla Cross held firm in second place, with 6,233 units sold, surpassing the Jeep Compass for the first time, establishing itself as the best-selling midsize SUV in Brazil.

The Honda HR-V appeared as the third best-selling SUV, with 5,259 units registered.

Meanwhile, the Creta dropped to fourth place among SUVs, being surpassed by the Fiat Fastback, which recorded 4,676 registrations, positioning itself as the fifth best-selling SUV.

The Compass, on the other hand, fell to sixth place, with 4,543 units registered.

The Tracker, traditionally the runner-up in the SUV ranking, lost its position, dropping to seventh place in total sales.

However, the Tracker still maintained fifth place among compact SUVs, with 4,297 units sold.

The top 10 SUVs in April also included the Nissan Kicks, which reached eighth place, with 4,006 units registered, followed by the Volkswagen Nivus, which came in ninth place, with 3,608 registrations.

The Renegade from Jeep rounded out the top 10, with 3,380 units sold.

The Automotive Market in April: A Changing Landscape

The numbers for April reflect a transforming market, where the preference for models like the Polo and the Argo shows a new consumption behavior.

With the growth of SUV sales, more traditional models, such as the HB20 and the Onix, are facing a challenging landscape.

The shift in preferences can be explained by factors such as increased purchasing power, a demand for more space and comfort, and the evolution of SUV design.

Although the Volkswagen Polo has gained the lead, the data also shows that the market for popular cars remains competitive, with the Fiat Strada, Fiat Argo, and Chevrolet Onix still among the best-selling models.

On the other hand, the rise of SUVs seems to be an irreversible trend, with models like the T-Cross and the Corolla Cross standing out as the best sellers in their categories.

The Impact of SUVs on The Brazilian Market

SUVs continue to be the favorite choice of many Brazilian consumers.

The market is seeing an increase in demand for these vehicles, which offer more comfort, space, and versatility, characteristics that especially attract families.

The Toyota Corolla Cross, with its growing position in the market, is a reflection of this change in preferences, which has intensified in recent years.

The growth of hybrid and electric models in Brazil also directly influences this change, as many consumers seek more sustainable and economical alternatives for daily transportation.
