New Airport in Tocantins Aims to Facilitate Travel to Jalapão. With Construction Nearly Completed, the Attraction Promises to Transform Local Tourism!

The Tocantins is about to receive an important addition to its tourist infrastructure. The inauguration of the new airport in São Félix do Tocantins, scheduled for December 2025, promises to transform the experience of visitors wishing to explore the beauty of Jalapão State Park.

With an investment of R$ 20 million, the project, which began in February, is in the final construction phase and aims to facilitate access to one of the country’s most sought-after ecotourism destinations, which welcomed nearly 60,000 tourists between 2022 and 2023.

Located about 180 kilometers from Palmas, the São Félix Aerodrome is designed to meet the growing demand from tourists, shortening travel time and providing more comfort.

The state government’s initiative primarily seeks to boost local tourism by creating a direct gateway to the arid landscapes and famous “fervedouros” that characterize the region.

Airport in the Heart of Jalapão: A Look at the Infrastructure

The new airport in Tocantins was designed with a structure aimed at being functional and aesthetically pleasing.

The small facility will feature yellowish decor at the entrance and will be landscaped, harmonizing with the Cerrado landscape.

With a total area of 750 square meters, the aerodrome includes a hangar of 2,430 square meters.

The runway will measure 1,100 meters in length and 23 meters in width, allowing for the operation of smaller aircraft, such as the Antonov AN-2, which can carry up to 12 passengers, and other similarly sized or smaller models.

Thus, the structure is ideal for charter flights and executive aviation, which are common in remote destinations.

Despite the projected inauguration at the end of the year, air operations can only begin after the aerodrome is approved by Anac (National Civil Aviation Agency).

The airlines that will operate at the location have yet to be defined, indicating that negotiations are ongoing.

What to Expect from the Destination: The Wonders of Jalapão

Jalapão, which spans an area equivalent to the state of Sergipe, is a true ecotourism paradise.

The park encompasses nine municipalities, including Ponte Alta do Tocantins, Mateiros, and São Félix do Tocantins itself, where the new airport is located.

The landscape of Jalapão is diverse, ranging from low cerrado to grasslands. However, the highlight of the region is its rivers and streams with crystal-clear waters, the imposing golden sand dunes, and the “fervedouros,” which are bubbling water wells that prevent people from sinking due to the pressure of the spring. The Fervedouro Bela Vista, with its turquoise-blue water, is one of the most famous.

Besides the fervedouros, visitors can explore other points of interest, such as the majestic Cachoeira da Velha, the Prainha do Rio Novo, perfect for a refreshing swim, and the stunning Cachoeira do Formiga.

The improved access that the new airport in Tocantins will provide will place these locations on the itinerary of an even greater number of people.

A Leap for the Economy and Tourism in Tocantins

The investment of R$ 20 million in the construction of the aerodrome reflects the government of Tocantins‘ betting on the tourism potential of Jalapão.

Tourism in the region has been steadily growing, and the new infrastructure is seen as a strategic step to consolidate the destination on the national and international stage.

With the new airport, the travel time to Jalapão will be drastically reduced, eliminating the need for long car journeys from Palmas.

This makes the destination more accessible to a broader audience, including those with little time to travel. On the other hand, the arrival of more tourists could create jobs and boost the local economy, benefiting communities that depend on tourism.

The inauguration of the aerodrome in São Félix is a milestone for Tocantins, signaling a new chapter for adventure tourism and ecotourism in the state.

With the completion of the project, the region will be better prepared to welcome visitors, offering a more complete and convenient experience.
