Lula Is Expected to Launch the “Gas for the People” Program in Aglomerado da Serra, Belo Horizonte, Promising to Assist 15.5 Million Families by 2026.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) is expected to launch the new gas voucher in Aglomerado da Serra, Belo Horizonte, next week.
The community is considered the largest favela in the capital of Minas Gerais, with about 50,000 residents.
The event is scheduled for next Thursday (September 4), according to the government’s Social Communication Secretariat (Secom).

The suggestion to hold the launch at the location came from the Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, who is from Minas Gerais. The act is part of a phase described by allies as “total campaign mode,” in which Lula intensifies announcements of social programs.
Featured Social Program
Named “Gas for the People,” the benefit is seen as a showcase of the government at the end of the term. It complements other measures, such as the expansion of free electricity and the exemption from Income Tax for those earning up to R$ 5,000 per month.
Gas for the People is expected to reach 15.5 million families by 2026, with an estimated cost of R$ 5 billion. Initially, the forecast was to assist 17 million families.
The name has also been changed: the initial proposal was “Gas for Everyone“.
How the Benefit Will Work
The current model of the gas voucher consists of cash transfers, which are often used for other purposes. The new format changes this logic.
Families registered in CadÚnico with a per capita income of up to half a minimum wage will be entitled to the free withdrawal of LPG cylinders. Thus, the government ensures that the benefit is used specifically for cooking gas consumption.
Additionally, the expectation is that the measure will bring political and social visibility in vulnerable regions, reinforcing the branding of programs aimed at low-income populations.
