The Chevrolet Astra Sedan, produced between 1998 and 2011, remains attractive in the used car market. With prices starting at R$ 18,729.00, it offers a powerful 2.0 engine, spacious interior, and a good level of equipment. However, high fuel consumption and the absence of modern technologies are points to consider.

As the price of new cars in Brazil skyrockets, finding a vehicle that offers power, comfort, and full equipment without emptying the bank account seems like a distant dream.

However, in the used car universe, a robust and reliable sedan re-emerges as a true find: the Chevrolet Astra Sedan.

Even out of production for over a decade, the model remains among the most recommended for those seeking cost-benefit and easy maintenance mechanics.

With values ranging from R$ 23,000 to R$ 35,000, depending on the year and version, the Astra Sedan impresses with attributes that often lack in many modern compact cars.

But despite its qualities, it requires attention in some areas, such as fuel consumption and recurring issues that may arise with the vehicle’s age.

A Spacious Sedan with European DNA

Launched in Brazil in February 1999, the Chevrolet Astra Sedan quickly won over the public thanks to its combination of internal space, modern design for the time, and robust performance.

Produced by General Motors of Brazil (GMB), the model inherited the mechanical reliability of its predecessor, the Monza, and brought a more sophisticated proposal to the market.

Initially, the GL 1.8 (110 hp), GLS 2.0 (112 hp), and GLS 2.0 16V (128 hp) versions arrived at dealerships.

The simpler GL version did not even offer a tachometer, while the GLS added power windows, electro-hydraulic steering, and aluminum wheels.

The sunroof, ABS, and airbags were optional, further increasing the cost-benefit of the more complete units.

Starting in 2001, the Astra GL evolved, gaining a tachometer and height and depth adjustments on the steering wheel, while the GLS 2.0 16V began delivering 136 hp, improving performance.

In that same year, the special series Advantage brought air conditioning, onboard computer, and fog lights.

Restructuring and More Power with the FlexPower Line

In 2003, the Astra Sedan underwent significant visual restructuring, adopting a new front and rear design.

Under the hood, the 1.8 and 2.0 engines were maintained, but more options were added, with the 2.0 FlexPower debuting in 2004.

This flexible engine, capable of delivering up to 127.6 hp with gasoline and 121 hp with ethanol, became one of the model’s great advantages.

The versions were rebranded to Comfort, Elegance, and Elite, all featuring air conditioning, power steering, and power windows.

However, the Elite version offered exclusive differentials, such as side airbags, ABS with EBD, leather seats, and a CD player, characteristics that still make it the most sought-after option among used cars today.

The Rarity of the Astra Multipower: Three Fuels and Reinforced Suspension

An interesting feature of the model was the Multipower version, launched in Comfort and Elegance configurations.

The differential was the factory adaptation for the use of Natural Gas Vehicle (GNV), in addition to gasoline and alcohol.

To support the GNV tanks in the trunk, the rear suspension received reinforced springs, compensating for the additional weight of approximately 90 kg.

Despite occupying almost half of the luggage space, this configuration represented an economical option for drivers covering long distances, especially in times of expensive fuels.

Common Problems and Points of Attention

Even being a robust car, the Astra Sedan is not free from recurring problems, especially in older units. Among the main reports from owners are:

  • Engine Overheating: This problem usually arises from failures in the thermostat, water pump, or temperature sensor. In such cases, a simple cleaning or adding coolant to the radiator may be sufficient.
  • Electro-Hydraulic Steering: Offered until 2001, the electro-hydraulic steering was replaced with hydraulic due to high cost and lower durability. A new kit can cost up to R$ 4,500 at the dealership.
  • Failures in the Onboard Computer: Burnout of LEDs can hinder the reading of characters on the display. The cost of replacement at a dealership is around R$ 2,000, but it is possible to find options in the parallel market for R$ 250 to R$ 350.
  • Suspension: Noises in the suspension usually appear over time, often due to the plastic tie rod, a part that connects the stabilizer bar to the shock absorber. The solution is to replace it with a metal tie rod, which offers greater resistance.
