With values ranging between R$23 thousand and R$35 thousand, depending on the year and version, the Astra Sedan impresses with attributes that are often lacking in many modern popular compacts.
But, despite its qualities, it requires attention in some areas, such as fuel consumption and recurring problems that may arise with the age of the vehicle.
A spacious sedan with European DNA
Launched in Brazil in February 1999, the Chevrolet Astra Sedan quickly won over the public thanks to its combination of interior space, modern design for the time and robust engine.
Produced by General Motors of Brazil (GMB), the model inherited the mechanical reliability of its predecessor, the Monza, and brought a more sophisticated proposal to the market.
Initially, the GL 1.8 (110 hp), GLS 2.0 (112 hp) and GLS 2.0 16V (128 hp) versions arrived at dealerships.
The simpler GL version did not even offer a rev counter, while the GLS added an electric trio, electro-hydraulic steering and aluminum wheels.
The sunroof, ABS and airbag were optional, which further increased the cost-benefit of the more complete units.
From 2001 onwards, the Astra GL evolved, gaining a rev counter and height and depth adjustment on the steering wheel, while the GLS 2.0 16V started to deliver 136 cv, improving performance.
That same year, the special series Advantage brought air conditioning, on-board computer and fog lights.
Restyled and more power with the FlexPower line
In 2003, the Astra Sedan underwent a significant visual restyling, adopting a new front and rear design.
Under the hood, the 1.8 and 2.0 engines were maintained, but gained more options, with the 2.0 FlexPower debuting in 2004.
This flex engine, capable of delivering up to 127,6 hp with gasoline and 121 hp with ethanol, became one of the great advantages of the model.
The versions were renamed to Comfort, Elegance and Elite, all featuring air conditioning, power steering and an electric trio.
However, the Elite version offered exclusive features, such as side airbags, ABS with EBD, leather seats and CD player, features that still make it the most sought-after option among pre-owned cars.
The rarity of the Astra Multipower: three fuels and reinforced suspension
An interesting curiosity about the model was the version Multipower, launched in Comfort and Elegance configurations.
The difference was the factory adaptation for use in Vehicle Natural Gas (CNG), in addition to gasoline and alcohol.
To support the CNG tanks in the trunk, the rear suspension received reinforced springs, compensating for the additional weight of approximately 90 kg.
Despite taking up almost half the luggage space, this configuration represented an economical option for drivers who traveled long distances, especially in times of expensive fuel.
Common problems and points of attention
Even though it is a robust car, the Astra Sedan is not free from recurring problems, especially in older units. Among the main reports from owners are:
- Engine overheating: The problem usually arises from faults in the thermostatic valve, water pump or temperature sensor. In these cases, a simple cleaning or adding liquid to the radiator may be sufficient.
- Electro-hydraulic steering: Offered until 2001, electro-hydraulic steering was replaced by hydraulic steering due to its high cost and shorter lifespan. A new kit can cost up to R$4.500 at the dealership.
- On-board computer failures: Burnt out LEDs can make it difficult to read the characters on the display. The cost of replacement at a dealership is around R $ 2 thousand, but on the parallel market it is possible to find options for R $ 250 to R $ 350.
- Suspension: Suspension noises tend to appear over time, usually due to plastic connecting rod, the part that connects the stabilizer bar to the shock absorber. The solution is to replace it with a metal tie rod, which offers greater resistance.

I have a wonderful 2011 astra advantage
It would be easy to have an even though I found the Vectra much more beautiful and comfortable with more interior space, but until 2005 after that it was nothing more than an Astra H that the Brazilian managed to be fooled into buying as a Vectra, (not that it is a bad car, quite the opposite, the bad thing was having paid more for a car in a lower category) plus an excellent engine with power and low consumption, knowing how to use the right gears and cheap maintenance and easy to fix and find parts.
