Designer Robot That Always Wins at Rock-Paper-Scissors Offers Challenge with Prize of US$ 10,000
Mark Rober, the renowned American YouTuber known for his innovative scientific content, has just revealed one of his most impressive creations: a robot named “Rocky” that challenges and wins the game of rock, paper, scissors with remarkable precision.
This robot, which seems to be unbeatable, combines advanced technology to anticipate and defeat any human opponent.
Who Is Mark Rober?
Mark Rober is not just any name on the internet. A former NASA engineer, he has become a popular figure on YouTube, where he shares inventions and scientific experiments with a wide audience.

Robots learn from dogs to understand human gestures and can now locate objects with 89% success.
-
In a tomb in the ancient Egyptian capital of Tanis, in the Nile Delta, archaeologists found 225 funerary figurines that were meant to serve the deceased in the afterlife.
-
AI promises to revolutionize the world, but its data centers could create an invisible toxic crisis: a study by Nature estimates up to 5 million tons of electronic waste by 2030, with servers, GPUs, lead, cadmium, and rare metals that global recycling still cannot absorb.
-
11 African countries are racing against the advance of the Sahara with an 8,000 km green wall, billions of dollars in international support, and the nearly impossible mission of restoring 100 million hectares before the desert turns fertile lands into dead zones.
Additionally, Rober is the founder of CrunchLabs, a company dedicated to creating monthly science kits that encourage hands-on and fun science learning.

How Does Rocky Work?
Rober’s robot Rocky is a true engineering marvel that employs motion tracking technologies and rapid data processing.
The robot is equipped with infrared motion sensors and a minicomputer capable of identifying hand movements and finger positions of the opponent in real time, analyzing and responding in a fraction of a second.
“Rocky not only tracks the position of my hands, so it follows my movements up and down, but it also checks the position of my fingers 100 times per second using an infrared hand motion detector“, Rober explained. This allows Rocky to identify the opponent’s choice and react even before the human completes their hand gesture, ensuring an almost guaranteed win.
Challenge to Opponents and Cash Prize
Rober recently published a video on his YouTube channel showing Rocky in action and challenging his viewers to face the robot. For those who managed to defeat it, he offered a prize of US$ 10,000, but so far, no human opponent has been able to beat Rocky.
The video has become a major success on the platform, racking up millions of views and generating posts about the robot’s power.
Strategy to Increase Chances of Victory
Despite Rocky’s high technology, Rober presented an interesting tip to increase the chances of winning in rock-paper-scissors, at least against human opponents. “You should know that there’s a trick you can use when playing against other humans to win 75% of the time,” he said.
He explains that a study of 54,000 rock-paper-scissors matches follows a pattern: if the opponent wins, they are more likely to repeat their last choice, while losing, they tend to switch their choice to the next in the sequence.
For example:
- If a player loses using “rock”, there is a higher chance they will try “paper” in the next round.
- This technique, however, is almost useless against Rocky, who responds instantaneously.
Other Rock-Paper-Scissors Robots
Although Rocky is innovative, it is not the first robot to master this simple game. In 2012, the Ishikawa Group Laboratory in Tokyo, Japan, created the Janken robot, also unbeatable, which used high-speed tracking technology to anticipate the opponent’s movements.
Rober’s creation takes the concept to another level, as he has integrated this technology into a publicly available toy, making Rocky a unique experience for the average user.
Rocky represents more than just a win in a child’s game; it symbolizes the advancement of technology and the creativity of inventors like Mark Rober. Now, the big question is whether anyone will be able to beat Rocky and take home the $10,000 prize.
