Giant equipment left Thailand, crossed the sea, passed through the Manchester Ship Canal, and advanced along the M53, in a night operation that marked one of the largest road transports ever recorded in the United Kingdom
The largest piece ever transported by road in the UK arrived at the Essar Refinery on the 14th of 2022, after leaving Thailand in June, crossing the sea, continuing by barge, and slowly advancing along the M53.

Record on British roads
The arrival marked the end of an unusual operation, defined by the size of the equipment and the combination of logistical stages.
The road journey was short but required a total blockade of the M53 Motorway between a Saturday and a Sunday.

Soviet jet Yakovlev Yak-40 that was donated to USP has been completely abandoned for about 20 years and even has a bird’s nest in it.
The operation took almost all night. The largest piece ever transported advanced on axle lines prepared to support the assembly, with the help of cranes used to position the equipment before movement.

How the largest piece ever transported was moved
The equipment left Thailand in June, transported by ship. Afterwards, it traveled by barge through the Manchester Ship Canal, before reaching the final road stretch to the Essar Refinery.
On the highway, the maximum speed was 6.4 km/h. The slow pace matched the dimension of the cargo, which was 26.5 meters long, 18.5 meters high, and 14.2 meters wide.
The movement occurred between Saturday and Sunday and took almost the entire night. To allow the passage of the largest piece, the M53 was completely blocked during the operation, which was complex due to the item’s volume and size.
First furnace of its kind
The cargo received by Essar was the first furnace of its kind in the UK. The equipment operates with hydrogen and will play a central role in the installation when the entire structure is ready in 2026.
The furnace is expected to reduce pollutant emissions by 240,000 tons per year. The delivery on the 14th is part of the company’s long-term strategy to transform its refinery into a low-emission operation.
Essar’s low-carbon plan
Essar aims to become the UK’s first low-carbon refinery. In addition to the hydrogen furnace, the company invests in energy efficiency, low-carbon energy, and carbon capture and storage.
Deepak Maheshwari, CEO of Essar Oil UK, stated that the receipt occurred after years of planning and months of transport. He thanked National Highways and Cheshire Police for the safe arrival.
The executive cited the unprecedented nature and technology of the new furnace in the UK. For the company, the largest piece symbolizes a long-term commitment to decarbonizing operations.
