BYD’s mega operation in Itajaí will gather thousands of imported vehicles, special routes for car carrier trucks, and a rare logistical structure on the Santa Catarina coast, affecting traffic, the port, and the national distribution of the Chinese manufacturer’s electric and hybrid cars.

The Port of Itajaí, on the Northern Coast of Santa Catarina, is expected to receive on June 23 one of the largest automotive operations ever scheduled for the city, with the arrival of a BYD mega ship loaded with 7,200 vehicles.

With the new schedule, the routine around the port area is expected to undergo temporary changes, as the movement will require operational teams, access control, organization of yards, and specific routes for the circulation of car carrier trucks.

Within the Chinese manufacturer’s logistical plan, the Santa Catarina terminal is expected to handle approximately 11,700 cars between May and June, adding the shipment already unloaded in Itajaí and the second phase scheduled for the 23rd.

BYD operation places Itajaí at the center of automotive logistics

In the first phase, which began on May 26, a Grimaldi ship unloaded about 4,500 vehicles at the Port of Itajaí, in an operation that already demonstrated the size of the structure prepared to receive the cars.

According to the city hall, this phase mobilized approximately 150 workers and about 90 car carrier trucks during 24 hours of activity, with teams working on the quay, drivers, port operators, and logistical support professionals.

To handle the unloaded volume, the vehicles needed to leave the ship, be organized on land, and move to temporary storage areas before being gradually released for road distribution to different destinations.

Scheduled for June 23, the second phase is expected to concentrate the largest volume of cars in the operation, with the arrival of the BYD Shenzhen ship at the Santa Catarina terminal and the planned unloading of 7,200 units.

Being a ro-ro type vessel, the ship allows vehicles to drive on and off through internal ramps, a system used in the maritime transport of automobiles, trucks, machinery, and other wheeled cargo.

In practice, this model reduces the dependence on cranes and makes unloading faster, although the land operation still requires detailed organization to avoid vehicle accumulation at the terminal and nearby roads.

Unloading of 7,200 cars will impact traffic in Itajaí

With 7,200 vehicles expected in a single stop, the operation requires a different circulation scheme from the city’s normal flow, especially around the port and in the corridors used for the arrival and departure of car carriers.

Therefore, the Itajaí city hall has prepared a traffic plan aimed at reducing congestion, organizing the entry of empty trucks, and controlling the exit of vehicles already loaded after unloading at the terminal.

According to the defined route, empty car carriers should access the port complex from exit 120 of the BR-101, one of the main road connections in the Northern Coast region of Santa Catarina.

After this access, the movement will follow a predetermined path, passing through Adolfo Konder and Carolina Vailatti avenues, as well as Indaial and Felipe Reiser streets, used as part of the logistics corridor.

By concentrating heavy traffic at these points, the city hall seeks to prevent large vehicles from circulating in a dispersed manner through residential or commercial streets, which could amplify the effects on local traffic.

After loading, the car carriers will leave the area via Felipe Reiser street and continue through Benjamin Franklin Pereira and Blumenau streets, until reaching Reinaldo Schmithausen avenue and returning to the BR-101.

Special routes are expected to change the routine near the port

During the operation, the dynamics of Itajaí are expected to change mainly on the roads near the port, where the presence of car carriers tends to require extra attention from drivers, pedestrians, and merchants.

As each transport truck occupies a large space and travels at a reduced speed, circulation needs to be coordinated in sequence, avoiding prolonged delays and reducing the risk of blockages at strategic intersections.

Even with organized routes, the passage of dozens of car carriers in concentrated periods can impact the routine of those circulating in the vicinity, especially in the sections used for access to the port complex.

In addition to the impact on traffic, the arrival of the vessel increases the demand for services related to the port chain, from unloading vehicles to inspection, internal movement, convoy formation, and release for transport.

This type of operation also reinforces the role of Itajaí as a strategic point for car imports, at a time when the Brazilian market is receiving increasing volumes of electrified models.

With a tradition in large-scale port operations, the city expands its presence on the distribution route of imported vehicles, especially in operations that require integration between port, transport companies, and highways.

BYD increases volume of electric and hybrid cars in Brazil

The logistical offensive occurs amid BYD’s expansion in the Brazilian market, mainly in the segments of electric and hybrid cars, in which the Chinese automaker has been increasing its presence with models of different categories.

Among urban compacts, sedans, SUVs, and larger electrified vehicles, the brand has started to compete in various price ranges, supported by large-scale imports and the expansion of its dealership network.

The volume expected for Itajaí shows the scale of this strategy, as thousands of units landed in maritime operations allow for the supply of distribution centers and dealerships in different regions of the country.

By organizing concentrated shipments, the automaker reduces logistical bottlenecks and accelerates the arrival of vehicles to the market, especially in a scenario of higher demand for electrified options among Brazilian consumers.

In this movement, the Dolphin line stands out by bringing together some of BYD’s most well-known models in Brazil, including Dolphin Mini, Dolphin, Dolphin SE, and Dolphin Plus, all linked to the brand’s expansion in the country.

With different versions within the same family, the automaker tries to reach various buyer profiles, combining urban vehicles, an electric proposal, and commercial campaigns aimed at reducing entry barriers for the consumer.

Insurance campaign targets BYD’s Dolphin line

Alongside the port movement, BYD of Brazil reinforced a partnership with Porto Seguro in a campaign aimed at the zero-kilometer models of the Dolphin family, with specific protection conditions for buyers.

The initiative covers proposals made until July 30 and serves individuals and companies throughout the national territory, except for Rio de Janeiro, offering a policy valid for 12 months.

With this action, the automaker seeks to make the cost of protection more predictable for customers interested in the line’s electric vehicles, although additional coverages, usage profile, and contractual conditions may alter final values.

Established in 2023, the partnership between BYD and Porto Seguro has regained prominence as a complement to the brand’s expansion strategy, which combines importation, distribution, dealership network, and commercial actions.

For the consumer, the campaign appears as another element within the purchase package, while the automaker strengthens the presence of the Dolphin line in an increasingly competitive market.

Dolphin G DM-i is confirmed for the Brazilian market

Another move by BYD involves the Dolphin G DM-i, a plug-in hybrid configuration that brings significant changes compared to the electric hatch already sold in Brazil and expands the model’s family abroad.

Revealed for the European market, the vehicle is scheduled for launch in June and is confirmed for Brazil in 2027, as part of the automaker’s strategy to expand the offer of plug-in hybrids.

Although few technical details have been disclosed, the proposal indicates a hatch different from the Dolphin known by Brazilian consumers, with a combination of electric and combustion engines to deliver greater combined autonomy.

The arrival in the country only in 2027 places the Dolphin G DM-i in a later stage of planning, while BYD focuses efforts on distributing the models already part of the national portfolio.

Until then, maritime operations like the one scheduled for June 23 in Itajaí remain a central part of the automaker’s strategy, connecting large-scale importation, dealership supply, and expansion of electrified cars in Brazil.

With thousands of vehicles, workers, car carrier trucks, and special routes mobilized around the port, the new scale of BYD is expected to mark one of the most significant movements of the Chinese automaker in the national market.
