The Toyota Hilux Extended Cab Has Captured Drivers in Various Countries Due to Its Durability, Versatility, and Performance.

The Toyota Hilux is one of the most popular pickups in the world, recognized for its robustness, reliability, and performance on rough terrains. In Brazil, the Hilux is sold in single and double cab versions, but a specific variant that stands out for its design and functionality is not available in the Brazilian market: the Extended Cab Hilux.

What Is the Extended Cab Hilux?

The Extended Cab Hilux, also known as “Xtra Cab” in some markets, is an intermediate option between the single cab and the double cab.

This model offers additional space behind the front seats, allowing for the transport of larger items or even occasional passengers.

This extra space is ideal for those who need more versatility without compromising the cargo bed’s capacity.

In addition to the extra space, the extended cab provides greater security for valuable items, which can be stored in the rear compartment, protected from the elements and theft.

This configuration is quite attractive for self-employed professionals and small business owners who need a multifunctional vehicle.

Where Is the Extended Cab Hilux Sold?

This version of the Hilux is marketed in various international markets, such as:

  • South Africa: Under the name “Hilux Xtra Cab”, this version is quite popular among professionals in agribusiness and construction, being a reliable choice for tackling tough terrains.
  • Australia: The model, known as “Hilux Extra Cab”, is used by those who need extra space for equipment and tools, offering a balance between comfort and payload capacity.
  • Thailand: In the Thai market, the version is called “Hilux Revo Smart Cab” and is appreciated for its versatility for urban and rural use, being widely used by transportation and logistics companies.
  • Argentina: Manufactured at the Zárate plant, the Extended Cab Hilux supplies Latin American markets, except Brazil.

Why Is It Not Sold in Brazil?

Toyota chose not to offer the extended cab version in Brazil due to strategic market factors.

The demand for pickups in the country is predominantly directed towards double cabs, which better meet the needs of consumers who use the vehicle for both work and leisure.

Moreover, the pickup segment in Brazil is highly competitive, with models like the Chevrolet S10 and Ford Ranger dominating the intermediate options.

Another relevant factor is the taxation and specific regulations for commercial vehicles in Brazil, which can influence the feasibility of introducing the extended cab version in the country. Toyota prioritizes models with higher sales volume and proven acceptance in the domestic market.

Features and Specifications

The Extended Cab Hilux comes with engine options similar to the other variants in the lineup, usually equipped with 2.8-liter diesel engines and automatic or manual transmissions. Additionally, it offers advanced safety and technology features, such as stability control, hill-start assist, and multimedia systems compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Among the differentiators of this version are the foldable rear seats, which allow for full utilization of the interior space, and the possibility of installing customized compartments for transporting tools and equipment.

Potential in the Brazilian Market

Automotive industry experts believe that the Extended Cab Hilux could find a niche market in Brazil, especially among small rural producers and entrepreneurs who need a vehicle with greater payload capacity without sacrificing some internal comfort. However, Toyota has not shown any intention of bringing this version to the country.

Additionally, Brazilian consumers looking for a vehicle for mixed use, between work and leisure, could see the Extended Cab Hilux as an interesting alternative to the options currently available in the market.
