Comparison between hybrid SUVs reveals a less predictable contest in consumption, range, and performance, with an unexpected advantage for the Omoda 5 Prestige in a real test against the Toyota Yaris Cross XRX Hybrid.

In a comparative evaluation with gasoline, the Omoda 5 Prestige outperformed the Toyota Yaris Cross XRX Hybrid in real consumption, even with a disadvantage in the official efficiency ratings released for the two compact hybrid SUVs.

On the road, the Chinese model recorded 24.4 km/l, while the Toyota rival scored 14.4 km/l; in urban use, the averages were 17.2 km/l for the Omoda and 12.7 km/l for the Yaris Cross.

According to the official numbers cited in the comparison, the scenario seemed to favor Toyota, with 17.9 km/l in the city and 15.3 km/l on the road, compared to 15.1 km/l and 13.2 km/l for the Omoda 5 HEV.

During the practical evaluation, however, the order was reversed, making consumption one of the main arguments for the Chinese SUV in the direct competition with Toyota’s hybrid model.

Real consumption of the Omoda 5 changes the hybrid contest

This difference helps explain why the confrontation became more balanced between two compact hybrid SUVs that, although targeting the same audience, adopt very different technical strategies to save fuel and deliver performance.

In the Omoda 5 Prestige, the HEV hybrid system combines a 1.5 turbo four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, achieving 224 hp of combined power, a number significantly higher than the Japanese competitor.

Under a different approach, the Toyota Yaris Cross XRX Hybrid uses a 1.5 naturally aspirated engine associated with a flex hybrid set, with a total power of 111 hp and a CVT transmission aimed at more efficient driving.

In practice, the power difference appears in the recoveries and accelerations, as the Omoda showed stronger responses and quieter operation in situations where the Yaris required higher revs.

According to the evaluation, the Toyota SUV tends to make the combustion engine work harder on the road or with a load, while the Omoda maintains a more agile and less noisy drive.

51-liter tank increases the range of the Chinese SUV

In addition to the performance obtained in the test, the Omoda 5 Prestige has an advantage in tank size, a decisive factor for those who drive a lot and need to reduce the frequency of stops for refueling.

The Chinese SUV has a 51-liter tank, while the Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid uses a 36-liter tank, a difference that extends the range when real consumption is favorable to the Omoda model.

Considering the official figures mentioned in the comparison, the Yaris Cross could reach up to 644 km with one tank, while the Omoda would reach 770 km under the same reference conditions.

With the results obtained during the evaluation, the Chinese SUV would surpass the mark of 1,000 km with one tank, provided that the performance recorded in the test conducted with gasoline is maintained.

Even so, this average should not be treated as a guaranteed result for all drivers, because consumption varies according to speed, traffic, terrain, temperature, tire pressure, air conditioning use, and driving style.

The data, therefore, shows a significant advantage in that comparison scenario, but does not eliminate the natural variations of use that can alter the performance of any hybrid vehicle in everyday life.

Hybrid system explains part of the difference in consumption

Part of the difference lies in the way each hybrid system operates during driving, especially when the electric motor takes over the movement or shares work with the combustion engine.

In the Omoda 5 HEV, the strategy prioritizes the electric motor and uses the 1.5 turbo as support in different situations, which helps to combine low consumption with greater available power.

In the Yaris Cross, the combustion engine comes in earlier, although the SUV also has electric assistance at startup and in conditions of lower mechanical demand.

For this reason, the Omoda managed to combine low consumption with superior performance in the comparison, without relying solely on fuel economy to stand out against the Japanese rival.

Despite the disadvantage in the test numbers, Toyota maintains favorable points in important areas for daily use, such as the calibration of driving assistants and the more natural operation of support systems.

There was also a specific advantage for the Yaris Cross in legroom for those traveling in the back seat, a relevant aspect for families and drivers who frequently use the SUV with passengers.

Finish and trunk weigh on opposite sides

Inside the cabin, the Omoda 5 Prestige was described as more refined, with a more solid central console, soft-touch materials, and superior-looking finish compared to the direct rival.

Even with a good list of equipment, the Yaris Cross mixes leather upholstery with hard plastics and showed less careful finishing in some points observed during the comparative evaluation.

In compensation, Toyota offers a larger trunk, with 391 liters in the XRX Hybrid version, while the Omoda 5 Prestige provides 372 liters of luggage capacity.

Although the difference is small in absolute numbers, the extra volume can weigh in on the decision of families who prioritize travel, larger suitcases, or frequent use of the cargo compartment.

In terms of equipment, the contest is more divided, as the Omoda 5 Prestige includes a sunroof with opening, 360-degree camera, and front seats with electric adjustments, heating, and ventilation.

On the other hand, the Yaris Cross XRX Hybrid responds with a spare tire, 10-year warranty, and app commands, in addition to the perception of reliability associated with the Toyota network in Brazil.

Price of Omoda 5 Prestige reinforces advantage in comparison

The price difference completes the favorable picture for the Chinese model in the direct comparison, especially because the Omoda 5 Prestige combines greater power, a larger tank, and lower real consumption in the cited test.

The Omoda SUV appears on the brand’s website for R$ 184,990, while the comparison reports a price of R$ 189,990 for the Toyota Yaris Cross XRX Hybrid.

With these values, the advantage reaches R$ 5,000 between the compared versions, reinforcing the appeal of the Omoda for those seeking a compact hybrid with stronger performance.

This set places the Omoda 5 Prestige in a competitive position in the compact hybrid SUV segment sold in Brazil, without negating the points where Toyota still maintains relevant advantages.

The contest shows a less predictable market, where brand reputation, flex hybrid technology, real consumption, finish, power, and autonomy have started to weigh more evenly in the buyer’s choice.
