Tacks scattered on Vitória’s bike path have once again caused problems for cyclists who rely on electric and conventional bicycles for their daily commute. Flat tires, parts replacement, and delays for students and workers have increased concerns about safety on the stretch between Avenida Fernando Ferrari and Rodovia das Paneleiras.

Small metallic objects scattered on the bike path between Avenida Fernando Ferrari and Rodovia das Paneleiras, in Vitória, have once again caused problems for users of electric and conventional bicycles, who report flat tires, daily commute delays, and unexpected maintenance costs.

On Tuesday morning (5), student Lucas Lobato once again had his electric bicycle tire damaged when passing through the stretch, a situation that, according to him, has already happened twice recently at the same point on the path.

“The week before last, my tire went flat twice. It’s infuriating because it’s expensive to fix. The first time it went flat, I had to replace the inner tube because it was completely punctured. It’s dangerous. I don’t know the motivation of the person doing this,” the student stated.

In addition to the repair cost, cyclists state that the situation represents a risk of accident, mainly because the stretch has intense traffic and is close to a busy highway, where a sudden loss of stability can cause falls or force abrupt stops.

With the repetition of these incidents, concern has grown among residents, students, and workers who use the bike path daily for commuting between Vitória and Serra, especially during peak hours in the region.

Flat tires cause delays and damage for cyclists

While passing through the bike path on Monday (4), cyclist José Marcos told TV Gazeta that he saw at least six bicycles with flat tires along the route, a scenario that, according to him, has been frequently repeating itself at the location.

According to the report, the tacks were scattered at different points along the path, making it difficult for cyclists to pass without their tires being hit during the ride.

“It’s not the first time. Along the entire path, you find several tacks. It’s impossible to pass without getting a puncture. You leave for work and end up being two hours late to fix the tire,” said José Marcos.

Images sent by the cyclist show the damaged tire and small metallic objects stuck to the bicycle, reinforcing reports that the problem is not limited to isolated incidents but affects different users who pass through the region daily.

For those who use electric bicycles, the damage tends to be even greater, as the repair is not always limited to patching the tire, and in some situations, the inner tube needs to be completely replaced after suffering several punctures.

Vitória City Hall carried out cleaning on Rodovia das Paneleiras

After receiving complaints from cyclists passing through the region, Vitória’s Municipal Guard reported that teams were dispatched and advised affected users to file a police report, as the situation could constitute a crime.

According to the city hall, the Services Center carried out sweeps on the bike path between Monday night (4) and Tuesday (5), following new reports of flat tires and the presence of metallic objects scattered along the route.

The municipal administration stated that it maintains maintenance actions on the city’s bike paths and reinforced the need for immediate communication in similar cases so that new teams can be dispatched.

As of now, there is no public confirmation regarding the identification of the person responsible for scattering the tacks on the path.

Cases of tacks on bike path had already been reported

Reports of tacks scattered on Rodovia das Paneleiras are not recent and had already been registered in April, a period when cyclists reported flat tires after riding on the bike path between Vitória and Serra.

At the time, users stated that the small metallic objects were found in both directions of the road, increasing the suspicion that the material had been spread intentionally.

One of the affected cyclists, Nelson Paulo, stated at the time that the way the objects were distributed raised suspicion of intentional action. “If it weren’t intentional, it wouldn’t be on both sides,” he said.

Due to the fear of further damage, Nelson also reported that he had to change his daily route, an alternative that other cyclists began to consider given the sequence of incidents recorded in recent months.

Even with the cleaning actions carried out on the bike path, the repetition of these incidents keeps users who rely on bicycles to work, study, or get around the region daily on alert.
