Employee Of Cold Storage Company In Chile Received By Mistake A Million Dollar Amount, Disappeared After Promising To Return And Became Target Of Justice.

An employee of the Industrial Food Consortium, a Chilean cold storage production company, was surprised to receive a deposit far above the usual amount. Instead of the 500,000 Chilean pesos he earned per month (about R$ 2,800), the worker accidentally received 165,398,851 pesos, equivalent to approximately or around R$ 950 thousand.

Company Notices Error And Tries To Correct

The company’s human resources department identified the error and tried to contact the employee.

He even agreed to go to the bank the next day to return the money.

However, the agreement was not fulfilled. The next day, he did not show up for work and stopped responding to attempts to reach him by phone, text messages, and WhatsApp.

Resignation And Flee

Shortly thereafter, Cial was contacted by a lawyer on behalf of the employee. The message was clear: he had decided to resign from the position.

Since then, the man has disappeared. The company decided to take the case to Justice, alleging misappropriation of funds.

The case documents emphasize that he was duly informed that the amount did not correspond to any legal payment.

Six Months And No Sign

Six months after the incident, the IOL agency reported, in December 2022, that the police had still not located the former employee.

The company, in turn, continues to attempt to recover the lost amount. Meanwhile, the man seems to have vanished into thin air.

With a payment equivalent to 330 months of work in hand, the former employee seems in no hurry to reappear. It remains to be seen whether the payment is being well utilized — or if new complications are yet to come.
