With a capacity to generate 565 MW, the plant will use natural gas from the Brazilian pre-salt. The plant is expected to be completed by the end of 2022 and will become operational in January 2023. Estimates are that the construction of the project will generate more than 4,000 direct and indirect jobs in Macaé, according to the BNDES.

Marlim Azul Energia is a consortium formed by Shell Gas, Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems America, and Grupo Pátria for the project’s implementation.

“Marlim Azul is the most recent signal of our bet on the energy transition. Bringing new value to natural gas and reinforcing our position in energy production and commercialization makes this project a milestone in our century-long journey in Brazil,” said André Araujo, president of Shell Brazil.
