Preventive plan of the Manaus City Hall brings together food security, fight against fires, and logistics for areas affected by river recession
The Manaus City Hall presented, on July 5, 2026, a contingency plan to tackle the drought and possible impacts of El Niño in the second half of the year.
Among the main actions is the “Jaraqui da Gente” project, created to strengthen the food security of families registered in social programs.
Jaraqui da Gente anticipates supply before the water recedes
The fish will be purchased directly from local producers during the so-called “moon force,” a period when the fish is more abundant.

With this, the municipal administration intends to ensure supply before the water recession makes access to fish in Manaus difficult.
Plan also targets urban and forest fires
With forecasts of high temperatures and low humidity, the Manaus City Hall will also reinforce the fight against fires.
The actions will be conducted by a technical committee formed by 20 municipal departments.
Thermal drones will assist in monitoring
The Municipal Department of Environment, Sustainability, and Climate Change will start using drones equipped with thermal sensors.
The equipment will also have high-precision cameras to identify critical areas and points with a higher risk of fire.
Riverside communities will receive logistical support
The plan also includes measures for isolated areas and riverside communities in the rural area of Manaus.
The city hall plans a strategic stock of potable water and special vehicles, such as quad bikes, to transport supplies by land.
Municipality does not yet foresee an emergency decree
Currently, the municipal management is evaluating climatic indicators and rules out declaring an emergency or public calamity immediately.
The measures aim to contain fires, reduce logistical impacts, and preserve essential services during the recession.
In light of this preventive plan, do you believe that measures such as fish distribution, drone use, and water stockpiling can reduce the impacts of drought in Manaus?
