Apple redefines innovation: from self-driving cars to home robots. Advanced technology and AI come together to create unique assistants
Apple leaves behind its autonomous electric car, but thinks about giving birth to a domestic robot. The canceled self-driving car and its current investment in artificial intelligence would be the perfect foundations for venturing into domestic robotics.
Apple is reportedly working on a home robot. Its main rivals have already ventured into butlers or artificial pets like Astro, the Amazon robot. This new project would be the company's next big leap after venturing into mixed reality with the Vision Pro glasses that were seen in Spain.
Your home robotics would inherit part of the technology developed for its failed autonomous car and would benefit from advances in artificial intelligence that the company is preparing for this year.

Pressure for Innovation
The iPhone maker would be under increasing pressure to find new sources of revenue, said analyst Mark Gurman in an article for Bloomberg, where he details this new internal plan. Since the revolution brought about in the market by Steve Jobs with the iPhone, the company has been exploring new paths to be explored. Before canceling the Apple Car, it considered the future in three areas: automotive, home and mixed reality.
Although still at a very early stage, its engineers would have explored a mobile robot capable of watching and following people indoors. However, the news, which has not yet been officially confirmed, would not have impressed the stock market, which rose less than 1% to $169,65 at the close in New York. This lack of interest could influence the company's final decision whether or not to proceed with this project.
Apple Car Legacy Technology
It wouldn't be the first time that Apple repurposed what it achieved in developing the Apple Car into other devices. The neural engine that allows artificial intelligence to run on iPhones and Macs was originally created for the car. Technology created to use virtual reality while driving has also served as the basis for Vision Pro.
The car's operating system could also be adapted for these new robots. On its website, Apple published job offers for robotics-related profiles: “We’re looking for innovative, hard-working robotics and machine learning researchers and engineers to help us research, define, and develop complex, real-world intelligent robotic systems and experiences.” .
Challenges and Competition
Gurman mentions another, less realistic proposal that would have been floating around in the minds of Apple employees: a robot that does household tasks like cleaning dishes in the sink. Google has also ventured into this complicated world of vacuuming, laundry and cooking in projects where it collaborates with institutions like Stanford University. However, works like this and Alfie demonstrate the challenge of asking machines to take care of tasks as mundane as folding sheets.
For now, with no clear idea of when or how this Apple home robot would be revealed, its biggest rival is the Roomba. Robot vacuum cleaners are the most common autonomous machines in homes. They perform multiple but very specific functions and connect with phones or smart speakers for management.
