New Chinese Technology May Replace Air Conditioning With Pollutant-Free Refrigeration System
Researchers at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology have developed a new refrigeration technology based on metallic alloys, which promises to replace conventional air conditioning units. The proposal could drastically reduce energy consumption and emissions of pollutant gases. The innovation employs a process called elastocaloric refrigeration, which eliminates the need for gases like hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), substances identified as highly harmful to the environment. Instead, the system relies on the mechanical deformation of metals that, when compressed, heat up, and when returning to their original shape, cool down—creating an efficient and sustainable thermal cycle.
How Elastocaloric Refrigeration Works
The principle of the new technology lies in the manipulation of metallic alloys with specific properties. When these alloys are subjected to mechanical forces, they undergo structural changes that induce temperature variations. Compressing the material releases heat; when the force is removed, thermal absorption occurs. This cyclical behavior allows for heat extraction from one environment and its release into another, selectively cooling the desired space.
Unlike traditional systems, this refrigeration technology does not rely on compressors or gas expansion cycles, significantly reducing thermal losses and electric energy consumption.

Technology Is More Efficient Than Common Air Conditioning
According to data released by the Chinese researchers, the new system can be up to 48% more efficient than traditional air conditioning units. This is due to the elimination of gas compression cycles and better energy utilization during the thermal exchange process.
Another important point is that the metallic alloys used in the process have different transition temperatures, which allows for adjusting the system’s performance according to environmental conditions—a benefit for various applications, from residences to industrial environments.
Sustainability Is the Focus of the Project
The new refrigeration technology stands out for its low environmental impact, as it does not use substances controlled by international agreements such as the Montreal Protocol and the Kigali Agreement, which aim to reduce gases that worsen the greenhouse effect.
The air conditioning sector is responsible for a significant share of global energy consumption, and alternative technologies like this have been studied in various research centers as part of strategies for decarbonizing thermal processes.
Next Steps and Commercial Applications
Currently, the refrigeration technology developed in China is in the testing phase in laboratory and controlled environments. To reach the market, it will be necessary to overcome challenges related to material durability, scalability of production, and compatibility with existing ventilation systems.
Nonetheless, researchers are optimistic about the new solution’s potential for use in residential air conditioning, industrial environments, and even in electric vehicles, thanks to its energy efficiency and absence of refrigerant fluids.
The expectation is that, with support and investment, this alternative to air conditioning could establish itself as a viable solution in the coming years, especially in countries with energy matrices based on fossil fuels.
