Karina Buchalla Lutkus Becomes the First Brazilian Woman to Command the Airbus A380, the Largest Commercial Aircraft in the World, Marking a Historic Milestone for National Aviation.
On October 27, 2025, Brazilian aviation history gained a new chapter. The Brazilian Women Pilots Association confirmed that Commander Karina Buchalla Lutkus completed her final check flight and officially became the first Brazilian certified to command the Airbus A380, the largest passenger aircraft ever built, the ultimate symbol of global aeronautical engineering.
The information was released the following day, October 28, 2025, in a statement from the association itself, resonating in professional aviation networks, specialized forums, and among pilots in global commercial aviation. According to the association, this achievement “opens doors and reaffirms that there are no limits for those who believe, dedicate themselves, and have a passion for flying.”
Less Than 5% of Pilots Worldwide Are Women
Karina now joins an extremely restricted group. Less than 5% of pilots worldwide are women, and among those qualified to command two-deck widebody aircraft, the number is even smaller. Until now, no Brazilian had made it to the A380 cockpit.

This moment marks more than an individual career. It reinforces the growing prominence of women in aviation, celebrates Brazilian technical training, and demonstrates that national pilots, when given the opportunity, reach the highest levels of global aviation.
The Giant Aircraft That Karina Will Command
The Airbus A380 impresses by every metric:
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Height | 24 meters (equivalent to 7 floors) |
| Wingspan | 79.8 meters |
| Length | 72.7 meters |
| Maximum Capacity | 853 passengers |
| Maximum Takeoff Weight | 575 tons |
| Engines | 4 Rolls-Royce engines or Engine Alliance |
| Range | 15,200 km |
| Cruise Speed | 900 km/h |
| Crew | up to 25 professionals on board |
This is the largest commercial aircraft ever built in series. To operate it, the commander must demonstrate technical proficiency, extensive flight time in widebody jets, and advanced certifications for long-haul international routes.
In other words: reaching the command of an A380 is attaining the pinnacle of commercial aviation.
Training and Journey to the A380
Karina’s journey exemplifies how discipline and resilience shape high-performance professionals. The training of an A380 commander involves:
• over 10,000 accumulated flight hours (on average for this certification standard)
• previous experience as a co-pilot in widebody jets
• international certifications and intercontinental operations
• training in multimillion-dollar full-motion simulators
• evaluations of technical performance, cabin management, and emergency response
In her final check flight, the evaluator validates items such as:
• mastery of the aircraft’s electronic and hydraulic systems
• advanced crew and load management
• takeoff and landing procedures in complex conditions
• response to simulated scenarios of engine failure, pressurization, and navigation
• decisions under high cognitive load
The command certificate received by Karina attests to competence and operational leadership at the highest level of global commercial aviation.
What This Milestone Represents for Brazilian Aviation
Brazil has an aviation tradition: Embraer, recognized flight schools, internationally certified maintenance centers, and a military history of technical excellence. However, few opportunities allow a national pilot to command the largest aircraft on the planet.
Therefore, Karina’s achievement symbolizes:
• international recognition of Brazilian training
• a concrete achievement for women in aviation
• breaking a symbolic limit in the air transport sector
• the inclusion of Brazil in the elite of international cockpits
The association’s note emphasizes that this milestone “represents all the women who dream of flying ever higher.”
Women at the Top of Aviation: Statistics and Current Reality
According to data from the International Society of Women Airline Pilots:
• women represent about 5% of the global commercial aviation
• female commanders in widebody aircraft represent a fraction of that number
• female commanders in two-deck aircraft like the A380 are even rarer
With Karina’s certification, Brazil joins a select group that already includes representatives from Australia, the USA, the UK, and the United Arab Emirates.
The outcome is simple: this achievement is not just technical. It’s historical.
A Symbol for the New Generation
Every pioneering achievement resonates beyond statistics. In flight schools, flying clubs, and universities, young female students now have a new concrete example that the cockpit of the largest airplane in the world is within reach.
It serves as a reference for future Brazilian commanders, a boost for educational projects, and a clear signal to international airlines.
By taking her place in the left seat of the A380, Karina becomes part of a small group that is redefining who can be in command of the largest flying machines ever built.
The Highest Flight in Brazilian Aviation
Aviation is an industry of discipline, technical rigor, and real meritocracy. When a Brazilian pilot reaches the top of this operational hierarchy, the impact transcends the sector.
From now on, when the largest commercial aircraft in the world crosses continents with a Brazilian woman in command, national aviation will have yet another reason to sit in the first class of history.

What a crock story. Very comforting to know that it takes 10 hours of experience to qualify to do this.
Very poorly researched and written article!
Allow me illustrate by giving just three of loads of examples, that I can proffer.
1) “…even rarer…”!! Communicates nothing.
2) What is the age of the subject ,person? ( Admittedly might have missed it as I didn’t read your mediocre article to the end.)
3) How many hours does she have and on which equipment is she transitioning from? ( My guess would be that she has been an FO on the A380?
Oh well.
I think this is amazing it doesn’t matter if your a male or a female if you put your heart and soul and believe in yourself and have that drive and determination you can make your dream become a reality I think its amazing and well done Karina well done lady you should be proud of yourself I know as a woman myself I’m extremely proud to read this I don’t know you but I’m proud to have had the chance to read your journey to where you are today your absolutely amazing
