For The Sorrow Of Everyone, Other Streaming Giants, Such As Max And Disney+, Are Also To Follow The Same Strategy This Year!
The Procon of Paraná decided to go against one of Netflix’s most controversial policies: the fee for password sharing among users. In a recent action, the entity classified the measure as abusive and illegal, calling for its annulment. But, as if the controversy were not enough, other platforms like Max and Disney+ are also preparing to adopt the same strategy, generating even more dissatisfaction among subscribers, according to the website olhardigital.
Procon Takes Legal Action Against Netflix
In a groundbreaking initiative, the Procon of Paraná decided to take a stand against Netflix. The entity filed, last Monday (2), a lawsuit to overturn the password sharing fees that the streaming giant implemented. The measure, which began to be adopted in Brazil in May, requires subscribers to pay an extra fee of R$ 12.90 for each profile shared outside their residence.
According to the Procon, the charge is seen as illegal and abusive, violating consumer rights. In addition, the process is also based on a fine of R$ 11 million, already imposed by Procon of Minas Gerais on Netflix in July for the same reasons. The case is now being judged in the Court of Justice of Minas Gerais, and the expectation is that this battle will extend further.

Other Platforms Are Also Going To Adopt The Measure

If you thought this controversy would be exclusive to Netflix, you better be prepared. Following the same steps, both Max and Disney+ have already announced that they will block password sharing on their platforms soon. The reason? The financial loss generated by the “sneaky” individuals who share accounts.
The global streaming president of Warner Bros. Discovery, JB Perrette, confirmed that Max will begin implementing password restrictions in 2024, in an attempt to reduce losses recorded in the last quarter. And what about Disney+? Well, if you’re a subscriber to Disney’s platform, get ready, because the end of password sharing is scheduled for September 2024.
The Impact On Subscribers’ Pockets
In addition to sharing restrictions, subscription prices are not escaping this wave of changes. In the case of Disney+, the subscription prices for the platform, Hulu, and ESPN+ will also increase. In other words, in addition to not being able to share the account with friends, you will also have to shell out a little more to continue binge-watching your favorite series.
Netflix Remains Silent
So far, Netflix has not officially commented on the lawsuit filed by the Procon of Paraná. However, it is to be expected that the company, which has faced constant criticism since the implementation of the measure, will take a firm stance to defend its strategy. After all, password sharing has been a controversial topic in the streaming world, and it seems that platforms are willing to face user resistance.

Therefore, this battle between streaming platforms and subscribers promises many more chapters. What remains to be seen is whether, in the end, these measures will really generate the expected financial impact or if consumer dissatisfaction will lead to a turnaround.
