A Dutch Farmer Developed the E-Horse, a Lightweight Electric Tractor Powered by Solar Energy, Capable of Operating for 6 to 8 Hours Continuously. Discover How This Innovation Is Revolutionizing Sustainable Agriculture!
In recent years, the search for sustainable solutions in agriculture has gained global prominence. Technology has become a great ally of the sector, and one of the most innovative examples of this integration between sustainability and technological advancement comes from the Netherlands. The E-Horse, a solar-powered electric tractor, is the latest innovation designed to meet the needs of small and medium farmers.
How the E-Horse Works

Designed by Dutch farmer Bastian van der Veen, the E-Horse is a lightweight electric tractor with an innovative design that stands out for its fully electric operation.
Equipped with solar panels on the roof, the electric tractor can operate for six to eight hours continuously without the need for recharging, a significant achievement considering the energy requirements of the field.

China has ceased to be just a factory for cheap products and now challenges health giants: Chinese laboratories are advancing in medicines, while other countries recalculate their medical dependence.
The machine was developed by Boessenkool, a renowned company in the manufacturing of agricultural implements.
The conception of the E-Horse arose from Van der Veen’s personal need for a vehicle capable of meeting his harvests without causing harmful emissions to the environment. From the beginning, the project’s goal was to create an efficient and sustainable piece of equipment.
Sustainable Technology of the Electric Tractor
The E-Horse stands out for its infinitely variable traction, controlled by a small joystick, and it also features fully electric lifting and steering systems.
The absence of oil in the system, except for the wheel motor reduction, reflects the project’s commitment to reducing reliance on fossil fuels and industrial oils.
With four-wheel steering, the E-Horse can operate in both conventional and adapted modes, facilitating work in more challenging terrains, such as tight turns at the ends of fields.
The steering system can be automated via GPS, further optimizing precision in the field. The electric tractor weighs 1,880 kg without implements, which reduces soil pressure and allows for greater flexibility in agricultural operations.
Promising Results and Future Development
In 2023, the E-Horse was tested on a large scale in a weeding operation, demonstrating excellent performance and durability.
The solar panels, which provide most of the energy used by the tractor, ensure that it can work for several hours continuously without needing to stop for recharging.
The use of solar energy minimizes environmental impact and significantly reduces operational costs for the agricultural sector.
The promising results led to the decision to continue the development of the E-Horse. The next generation of the tractor will include new features, such as three lifting devices instead of just one, and it will be equipped with a fuel cell to further increase energy efficiency.
Additionally, the chassis will be redesigned to allow for the use of larger implements, up to six meters wide.
Technical Specifications
The E-Horse was designed to be lightweight, minimizing soil pressure while ensuring robust and efficient operation.
It is compatible with implements up to three meters wide, such as hoes and seeders. With a maximum travel speed of 13 km/h and a working speed of up to 8 km/h, the tractor meets the demands of most agricultural tasks.
Its power source is a 20 kWh lithium-ion battery, complemented by eight solar panels, with space to add up to four additional panels. The four-wheel traction and steering ensure that the E-Horse can operate on a variety of terrains with ease.
