Since 2020, when the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended strict distancing, Uber suspended the use of the front seat. However, after reviewing health guidelines in 2022, the platform decided to restore permission. Thus, in 2023, the company officially confirmed the return of passenger occupancy of the front seat. Uber stated, in communications between January and June 2023, that the resumption aimed to offer more flexible and more comfortable rides. In addition, the platform explained that the global health scenario had stabilized. Therefore, the company decided to adjust its internal norms to reflect this new moment.

Uber confirmed that vehicles with a capacity for five people can transport up to four passengers, including one in the front seat. However, the company emphasized that the driver has total autonomy to allow or deny the use of the front seat. This decision exists because the platform considers it essential to preserve comfort and safety. Therefore, the driver has the freedom to evaluate each situation.

Uber advises that the passenger inform their intention to use the front seat in advance. This communication should occur via the internal chat of the app right after the ride is accepted. Therefore, the platform recommends that the user send the message immediately. This way, possible misunderstandings are avoided.

If the driver does not allow the use of the front seat, the passenger can cancel the ride without penalty. Thus, Uber ensures that both parties have the freedom to decide. Additionally, the platform emphasizes that this practice avoids unnecessary conflicts.

Between 2020 and 2022, Uber implemented strict measures, such as mandatory mask use and passenger limitations. These actions followed direct guidelines from the WHO.
