In the official opening of the BRICS chancellors’ meeting, Brazil’s Foreign Minister, Mauro Vieira, used his speech to emphasize the urgency of diplomatic solutions for armed conflicts, directly citing the crises in Ukraine and Gaza. The meeting marks the beginning of Brazil’s presidency in the bloc in 2025 and was held at the historic Itamaraty Palace in Rio de Janeiro.

According to the minister, peace must be built on dialogue, respect for the sovereignty of countries, and multilateral cooperation. He stressed that BRICS’s role should be that of a stabilizing force in the international scenario, preventing the escalation of geopolitical disputes. In addition to the appeal for peace, Mauro Vieira highlighted BRICS’s commitment to the reform of the UN Security Council. Brazil, according to him, believes that the current structure does not reflect the realities of the 21st century, with little representation of developing countries.

The ministerial meeting that opened Brazil’s presidency also served as preparation for the summit of BRICS heads of state and government, which will take place on July 6 and 7, again in Rio de Janeiro. The expectation is that the leaders of the member countries will deepen discussions on issues such as global security, sustainable development, and strengthening the Global South.

The official website of the bloc, brics.br, reported that the Brazilian presidency intends to promote a series of discussions on more inclusive and sustainable global governance throughout the year, reinforcing the importance of equitable partnerships among countries in the Southern Hemisphere.
