The BYD Dolphin Mini Sold 3,300 Units in August and Is Already Threatening Brazilian Hatches. Is This the End of the Flex Car Era in the Country?
BYD Dolphin Mini Threatens Hegemony of Hatches in Brazil
What seemed unlikely has just become a reality. The BYD Dolphin Mini, a compact electric vehicle from the Chinese automaker, registered 3,300 registrations in August 2025, according to data from Fenabrave.
The model has carved out space in a market dominated for decades by combustion hatches, such as the VW Polo, Fiat Argo, and Hyundai HB20.
The surge occurred throughout Brazil and at an accelerated pace. In just one month, the car proved that consumers already consider electrification a viable alternative.

Owners of Chevrolet Agile discover a problem with the catalytic converter that can lead to a bill of up to R$ 4,000, steal engine power, increase fuel consumption, trigger the injection light, and worsen quickly when the first signs are ignored.

Thefts of catalytic converters are increasing in Brazil, a component that contains platinum, palladium, and rhodium, metals that can be worth more than gold, and can be removed from under a car in less than 2 minutes, causing losses of up to R$ 8,000 and only being noticed when the driver starts the vehicle and hears an extreme noise from the exhaust.

Losses that can exceed R$ 15,000 affect owners of Jeep Renegade and Compass after a failure in the heat exchanger mixes oil with coolant, generating emulsion in the system and causing overheating that can destroy the transmission.
The result is significant because it shows, for the first time, a 100% electric vehicle competing directly for the same audience as popular hatches, which were previously almost exclusively geared toward flex engines.
Sales Ranking Places Dolphin Mini Among Best-Selling Hatches
To understand the impact, just look at the ranking of the best-selling hatches in Brazil in August:
- VW Polo – 12,908 units
- Fiat Argo – 10,097
- Hyundai HB20 – 7,590
- Fiat Mobi – 7,045
- Chevrolet Onix – 5,815
- BYD Dolphin Mini – 3,300
Although still distant from the leader VW Polo, the Dolphin Mini has already sold more than half the volume of the Onix and has significantly surpassed traditional models like the Honda City Hatchback, Peugeot 208, and Citroën C3.
This unprecedented performance shows that Brazilian consumers value not only innovation but also the cost-benefit of electric vehicles.
BYD’s Hegemony in the Electric Segment
The success of the BYD Dolphin Mini did not come alone. It is part of a broader strategy from the Chinese brand, which already dominates the electric market in Brazil.
In August, BYD registered 5,649 100% electric vehicles, achieving an impressive 74.4% market share in the BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) segment.
Electric Sales Ranking in August 2025:
- BYD – 5,649 (74.4%)
- Volvo – 375 (4.9%)
- GWM – 320 (4.2%)
- GM – 317 (4.2%)
- GAC – 242 (3.2%)
Meanwhile, other traditional brands remain timid, with numbers far below. This scenario reinforces the idea that BYD not only leads but redefines the Brazilian automotive sector.
From Niche to Direct Competition with Brazilian Cars
More than just numbers, what stands out is the significance of this shift. Until recently, electric cars were seen as niche products, restricted to a specific audience. Now, with the BYD Dolphin Mini, they have reached the heart of consumer demand.
The model already ranks among the 20 best-selling cars in the country, which is unprecedented for an electric vehicle. Additionally, BYD itself reached 7th place among all the best-selling brands in Brazil in August, with 9,815 registrations, ahead of giants like Jeep and Honda.
Cost-Effectiveness and the Future of Hatches
The Dolphin Mini’s great advantage lies in its combination of technology, competitive price, and low maintenance costs. Because of this, this combination explains why so many drivers now consider it a real alternative to Brazilian combustion hatches.
Moreover, according to estimates, the compact has already accumulated 19,516 registrations in 2025 and may surpass 30,000 by the end of the year. If this pace continues, it will become the first electric car to achieve typical numbers of popular vehicles, further enhancing its appeal to consumers.
Traditional Automakers on Alert
This performance, in addition to solidifying the brand’s strength, pressures traditional automakers, which now need to accelerate electrification projects. Consumers have already shown that they are willing to shift to new technologies when they find not only added value but also real cost-effectiveness.
Therefore, the BYD Dolphin Mini has ceased to be just a gamble and has become a game-changer. It demonstrates that the future of Brazilian cars inevitably involves electrification, and consequently, flex hatches are no longer alone in the race.
