New Chevrolet SUV combines efficiency, refined handling, and robust technology package, bringing mechanical updates, advanced safety, and strategic positioning that could shake up the Brazilian market

The Brazilian automotive market has just gained a new protagonist. The Chevrolet Sonic RS 2027 emerges as a strategic bet by the automaker to compete among compact SUVs and more sophisticated urban models. The information was released by “g1”, based on comprehensive tests conducted with Chevrolet’s launch, which is already drawing attention for combining performance, comfort, and competitive pricing.

Right from the start, the Sonic 2027 shows it’s not just another option. On the contrary, it arrives with an efficient mechanical setup, updated technologies, and a positioning that could directly impact established competitors. Furthermore, the model brings important improvements, especially regarding reliability and the driving experience.

Performance, turbo engine, and mechanical evolution draw attention

To begin, the Chevrolet Sonic RS 2027 features a 1.0-liter three-cylinder turbo engine with direct fuel injection. This setup delivers 115 hp of power and 18.9 kgfm of torque, always combined with a six-speed automatic transmission available in the Premier and RS versions.

Furthermore, the model uses the same structural base as the Onix, but with adjustments that make a practical difference. Since the Sonic weighs 1,139 kg, about 100 kg less than the Tracker, the result is evident in accelerations, which become quicker and more responsive.

Consequently, this weight reduction ensures a sportier driving feel. At the same time, fuel consumption also improves compared to the Tracker 1.0 turbo, which reinforces the model’s efficiency proposition.

Another important point involves the controversial oil-bathed belt. Although the system is still present, General Motors has made significant improvements since 2025. Now, the belt uses more resistant materials, reducing risks even in situations with inferior quality oil.

According to the automaker, the component can last up to 20 years or 240,000 km, provided the maintenance plan is followed correctly. It’s worth noting that the recommended oil is synthetic 0W-20 with Dexos certification, essential to ensure the proper functioning of the system.

Comfort, handling, and technology elevate the model’s level

Beyond its mechanics, the Sonic RS 2027 surprises in its driving. Despite the 17-inch wheels suggesting a stiffer setup, the car delivers exactly the opposite. In practice, it absorbs road irregularities well, especially in cities like São Paulo.

Thus, the suspension system finds an interesting balance between comfort and stability. This makes the Sonic feel more like a large hatchback than a traditional SUV.

At the same time, the acoustic insulation also deserves mention. At low RPMs, the engine is quiet, while at higher RPMs it presents a pleasant rumble, without being bothersome.

Another important detail is the sound system, which positively surprises, offering good audio quality with well-defined mids and bass. Furthermore, wind noise remains controlled, which contributes to more comfortable journeys.

Inside, the model features an 8-inch digital cluster integrated with the 11-inch multimedia system, forming the so-called Virtual Cockpit System. The interface is intuitive and facilitates reading information.

Additionally, the Sonic offers wireless charging, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, plus the OnStar system with a free basic plan for 8 years. This package includes remote diagnostics and in-app commands.

The OnStar Protect plan adds features such as Wi-Fi, emergency assistance, and theft tracking, and can even remotely decelerate the vehicle.

Advanced safety and competitive market positioning

Regarding safety, the Sonic 2027 takes an important leap. The model debuts a new generation of Chevrolet Intelligent Driving, with a high-definition front camera that expands the coverage area by 40%.

As a result, automatic emergency braking now operates between 8 and 130 km/h. Furthermore, the system can differentiate between the road and side areas, such as grass, making interventions more precise.

During tests, the system demonstrated efficiency by alerting the driver with audible and visual signals before any automatic braking. This reinforces its preventive role.

The car also offers lane keeping assist, blind spot alert, and six standard airbags. The RS version adds full sensors and the Easy Park system, which performs maneuvers automatically.

Regarding space, the Sonic is 5 cm longer than the Onix, almost 2 cm wider, and 6 cm taller, maintaining a wheelbase of 2.55 m. The trunk reaches 392 liters, compared to 303 liters for the Onix.

On the other hand, rear space may be more limited for passengers over 1.80 m tall, which could influence the purchase decision.

Finally, the price becomes one of the main arguments. The Sonic arrives at R$ 129,990 for the Premier version and R$ 135,990 for the RS. However, this promotional value is only valid for the first 3,000 units. After that, the price could exceed R$ 140,000.

Therefore, the model positions itself among competitors like Nivus and Volkswagen Tera, offering an interesting alternative for those seeking cost-benefit.

Do you believe the Sonic RS 2027 truly has the strength to compete with Brazil’s best-selling SUVs, or is something still missing for it to dominate the market?
