Luntan One Oil Well, With a Current Depth of 8,882 Meters, Breaks the Record Set by Sinopec in 2019.

PetroChina Company, the largest oil and gas producer in China, announced on Thursday, 25, that it has completed drilling the deepest land well in Asia (in the Tarim Basin, the largest oil-producing area in China). Named Luntan and measuring exactly 8,882 meters, the well surpassed the previous depth record of 8,588 meters set by Sinopec.

The Luntan One well, with a current depth of 8,882 meters, broke the previous record of 8,588 meters set by Sinopec in February 2019, according to PetroChina’s Tarim Oilfield Company.

“Basically, we drilled the Everest, but underground”, highlighted Qiu Bin, the head of the exploration division. Everest is the highest mountain on the planet, standing at 8,848 meters, located in the Himalayas.

The company emphasized that the well demonstrates that its ultra-deep well drilling technology has reached globally advanced levels.

Cai Zhenzhong, head of the resource exploration department of the company, stated that the firm began drilling the well in June last year and overcame challenges posed by ultra-high temperature and ultra-high pressure conditions.

The Tarim Basin is the largest oil basin in China and one of the most challenging regions to explore due to its harsh land environment and complicated underground conditions.
