Correios Face Unprecedented Financial Challenges, Registering A Billion-Dollar Loss. The Crisis And Economic Impacts Raise Issues That Could Define The Future Of The Company In Brazil.
The Correios, one of the most traditional and widely used services in Brazil, are going through a time of serious financial and administrative crisis.
The state-owned company, which operates in all municipalities across the country, announced a loss of R$ 2.6 billion in 2024, representing a considerable drop compared to the result of 2023, which was negative by R$ 633 million.
The balance was disclosed last Friday (9) in the Official Gazette of the Union (DOU), highlighting the magnitude of the financial collapse the company is facing.

The airport that promises to bring tourists closer to Machu Picchu has become a symbol of threat to the Sacred Valley of the Incas, with protests, warnings from archaeologists, and fear of transforming cultural heritage into a corridor for mass tourism.
This is the worst performance recorded by the Correios since 2016, when the company also reported a billion-dollar loss, with a deficit of R$ 1.5 billion.
The current situation is alarming, especially since the Correios have not recorded positive results since 2021, when the profit was R$ 2.3 billion, during the government of Jair Bolsonaro.
According to the company’s financial report, only 15% of the agencies are profitable, meaning they generate profit.
The majority of units operate at a loss, reflecting the difficult situation faced by the state-owned company.
The Correios are going through a series of internal challenges, including delays in payments to suppliers and defaults in the health plan for employees.
In addition, the reduction in revenues caused by changes in the postal services market and competition with private companies has further hindered the recovery of the state-owned company.
Even amid the crisis, the company still stands out by ensuring universal postal service distribution, reaching all 5,567 municipalities in Brazil.
This, according to the company, justifies the charges applied and the maintenance of the service network, which covers both urban and rural areas.
The Impact Of Tax Changes On The Performance Of The Correios
One of the most significant factors contributing to the Correios’ billion-dollar loss in 2024 was the “T-Shirt Tax”, which resulted in an estimated loss of R$ 2.2 billion.
This loss is associated with taxation on international shipments, especially those from China, which became more stringent following changes in fiscal policies.
The impact was profound, primarily affecting the international parcel service, one of the company’s main sources of revenue.
International service revenues fell by 0.89%, with total revenue decreasing from R$ 21.67 billion in 2023 to R$ 21.47 billion in 2024.
The net revenue from sales and services also suffered a significant decline of 1.74%, totaling R$ 18.9 billion last year, compared to R$ 19.2 billion recorded in 2023.
The revenue reduction was particularly pronounced in the “Message” and “International Service” areas, which saw drops of R$ 531 million and R$ 157 million, respectively.
Despite these losses, the parcel segment performed positively, with an increase of R$ 157 million compared to 2023.
This area still demonstrates growth potential and is seen as one of the main alternatives for the company’s financial recovery.
The Correios, however, are far from recovering the significant losses faced in recent years, and the crisis situation continues.
Expenses Rise While Profits Disappear
Another important factor contributing to the negative result was the increase in the company’s total expenses, which rose by 7.91% compared to the previous year.
Expenses increased from R$ 22.30 billion to R$ 24.06 billion between 2023 and 2024.
Part of this increase is linked to operational costs for services rendered and maintaining the company’s infrastructure, which remains one of the largest in Brazil, even with the reduced number of profitable agencies.
The decrease in assets was also one of the critical points addressed by the company in its report.
The total assets of the Correios amounted to R$ 16 billion, which represents an 11.2% decrease compared to 2023.
The main reason for this decrease was the reduction of R$ 3 billion in financial investments, which led to a decrease in the company’s equity, which is now negative, with a value of R$ 4.4 billion.
Amid this difficult financial scenario, the company found itself forced to invest heavily to maintain its operations, with a total of R$ 830 million invested throughout 2024.
This amount was intended to improve the infrastructure and internal operation of the company, but it was still insufficient to avoid the accumulated losses.
Prospects For The Future Of The Correios
The financial situation of the Correios is concerning, but the company continues to be an essential pillar for Brazil, especially in more remote and less accessible areas.
The company still has the obligation to ensure universal access to postal services, as established in its institutional mission, and this obligation is seen as a significant challenge given its weakened finances.
However, greater effort is needed to restructure the state-owned company, seek new sources of revenue, and cut operational costs to achieve financial recovery.
The government, regardless of its political orientation, will have to deal with the dilemma of trying to save the state-owned company without compromising the quality of services provided to the population.
The future of the Correios depends on a series of reforms and strategic decisions that may or may not be effectively implemented.
The transformation of the company into a more efficient model, capable of competing with private companies, will be essential for ensuring its long-term viability.
What Can Be Done To Save The Correios From The Crisis?
With rising tariffs and falling revenues, the Correios face a difficult dilemma: how to balance the need to maintain affordable services for the population while also adjusting their finances to stay operational?
