The richest man on the planet has already sent cheese into space: SpaceX placed a wheel of Le Brouère inside the Dragon capsule, kept the cargo a secret, and turned a NASA test into one of the most unusual missions in history.

SpaceX’s orbital mission gained an unlikely detail when a secretive cargo revealed a reference to British humor inside the Dragon capsule, in a test that helped mark the company’s entry into commercial space transportation.

Elon Musk and SpaceX turned a demonstration flight of the Dragon capsule, conducted on December 8, 2010, into one of the most unlikely stories of private space exploration: the spacecraft carried a wheel of Le Brouère cheese hidden as secret cargo.

The unmanned mission departed from Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, aboard a Falcon 9 rocket, in a test linked to NASA’s Commercial Orbital Transportation Services program.

The joke was revealed only after the Dragon’s return, when SpaceX confirmed that the item kept under wraps was a wheel of cheese sent to space as a tribute to the British group Monty Python.

Cheese in space marked SpaceX mission

The choice of Le Brouère had no declared scientific function and was associated with the Cheese Shop sketch from the Monty Python’s Flying Circus show, in which a customer tries to buy cheese in a shop that has no cheese.

Before the revelation, Musk fueled the suspense by telling reporters that there was something funny on board and that anyone who liked Monty Python would understand the secret, without revealing what the cargo was.

The strategy helped keep public attention on a technical flight, but the joke only gained traction because the main operation was successfully completed, from launch to sea recovery.

According to Space.com, the wheel of cheese remained in the Dragon throughout the flight, from launch to splashdown, and was later presented as the secret cargo of the first Dragon capsule on an orbital mission.

Dragon capsule orbited the Earth and returned to the ocean

NASA reported that the Falcon 9 and Dragon lifted off at 10:43 AM Eastern Time on December 8, 2010, before the capsule performed maneuvers in orbit.

After completing the demonstration flight, the spacecraft re-entered the atmosphere and splashed down in the Pacific Ocean, about 500 miles, or approximately 804 kilometers, west of the Mexican coast.

Space.com recorded that the Dragon orbited the Earth twice before landing in the ocean, becoming the first commercial spacecraft to go to orbit and return safely.

This result carried more weight than the curiosity of the cargo, because SpaceX needed to demonstrate that a private spacecraft could operate in orbit, survive reentry, and be recovered after the flight.

Secret cargo referenced Monty Python

The presentation of the cheese reinforced the playful tone.

The cargo was placed in a metal cylinder attached to the capsule, with a screwed lid and a visual reference to the film Top Secret!, a comedy released in 1984.

In a statement quoted by Space.com, the company stated that the cargo was so secret that SpaceX employees made it “Top Secret,” in reference to the film starring Val Kilmer.

The description helped create an unusual image for a space mission: instead of a sophisticated experiment, sensors, or scientific instruments, the first orbital Dragon carried a food chosen for its humorous value.

Even so, Musk indicated that he did not want to reveal the secret ahead of time to prevent the joke from diverting attention from the main achievement, considered a milestone for the Dragon capsule.

Test helped pave the way for cargo flights

The 2010 mission was part of a decisive moment for SpaceX, which sought to prove the reliability of its technology in a sector historically dominated by government agencies.

At that time, the company already had a $1.6 billion agreement with NASA to conduct 12 cargo flights with Dragon spacecraft intended for resupplying the International Space Station.

The flight demonstrated the Dragon’s capability in an automated operation, without astronauts on board, and helped support SpaceX’s subsequent steps in commercial orbital transportation.

With this, the wheel of cheese ended up associated with an important turning point for the company: the combination of high-risk engineering, unusual communication, and verifiable operational result in a single mission.

The story is remembered precisely for the contrast between the object and the context.

On one side, there was a rocket, capsule, atmospheric reentry, and ocean recovery; on the other, a reference to a comedy sketch inside a commercial spacecraft.
