State Is About to Surpass São Paulo as the New Economic Power of Brazil. Discovery Is Seen as the Key to the Country’s Energy Future. But Environmental and Bureaucratic Challenges May Delay This Transformation.

Can you imagine Brazil with a new economic leadership? A state in the North of the country, which until now has not been among the main powers, may soon dethrone São Paulo.

This transformation is due to an impressive oil discovery off the coast of Amapá, with an estimated value of US$ 2.4 trillion, according to calculations that take into account the total capacity of the Equatorial Margin and the price of oil in September 2024.

According to geophysicist Sérgio Sacani, this discovery puts the state in a strategic position for Brazil’s energy future.

If properly explored, the coast of Amapá could not only ensure the country’s self-sufficiency in oil but also boost the local economy to unprecedented levels.

The Billion-Dollar Value: Where Does It Come From?

The estimate of US$ 2.4 trillion mentioned in the title refers to the oil capacity of the Equatorial Margin multiplied by the price of oil in September 2024, which is around US$ 410.

By considering the estimated number of barrels in the reserves and converting it to the current exchange rate of the dollar, one arrives at this billion-dollar figure.

The region, which spans from the coast of Amapá to Rio Grande do Norte, is considered one of the largest unexplored oil frontiers in the world.

According to experts, this wealth still needs to be confirmed through more detailed studies and production tests.

However, as pointed out by Sacani, the already known potential of the area places Brazil in a prominent position in the global energy landscape.

A Promising Future for Amapá

As Sacani highlighted in a recent interview, the exploration of this reserve off the coast of Amapá could prevent a crisis in the Brazilian oil sector.

The forecast is that oil production in the pre-salt layer, which currently supports a large part of the industry, will begin to decline starting in 2027.

Without new oil sources, Brazil risks needing to import large quantities to meet domestic demand, resulting in a significant price increase.

Exploration of the Equatorial Margin emerges as the perfect solution to this challenge. The quality of oil from the coast of Amapá, according to Sacani, is one of its great attractions.

The product can be processed more efficiently, with reduced operational costs, which favors a quick return on investment.

This transforms the region into an unexplored treasure, ready to boost the economy of the state and the country.

The Impact of the Pre-Salt Decline

Brazil’s current dependence on pre-salt oil is undeniable, but the projection that this production will begin to decline poses a significant challenge.

According to Sacani, the country may find itself forced to import large volumes of oil, something that would raise prices in the domestic market and increase Brazil’s energy vulnerability.

In this scenario, Amapá and the Equatorial Margin play a central role. The region has the potential to offset this production decline, keeping Brazil competitive in the international market and ensuring energy self-sufficiency.

However, the exploration of these reserves needs to be conducted urgently and carefully, as there are environmental and bureaucratic hurdles to be overcome.

Environmental and Bureaucratic Challenges

As Sacani revealed, one of the biggest obstacles to exploring these reserves is the environmental licensing process.

Petrobras, which leads exploration initiatives, faces difficulties in obtaining approval from Ibama.

The concern for the biodiversity of the Equatorial Margin, which is one of the richest and most sensitive regions in the world, poses a significant challenge for reconciling economic development and environmental sustainability.

Sacani emphasizes that exploration must be conducted responsibly, ensuring that economic benefits do not come at the expense of the environment.

The pressure to resolve this issue is high, as time is running against the urgent need for new oil sources.

The Opportunity for Amapá

For Amapá, this oil discovery represents a unique opportunity to transform its economy.

Oil royalties could position the state prominently, rivaling São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Minas Gerais.

The strategic position in the Equatorial Margin, coupled with proximity to the international market, could make Amapá a new wealth hub in Brazil, rewriting the economic map of the country.

Despite the enthusiasm surrounding the discoveries, there is still much to be done. The region remains unexplored, and the investments needed to harness this wealth are enormous.

However, with the imminent decline of the pre-salt, Brazil cannot afford to miss this opportunity.

Do you believe that Amapá and the North as a whole can benefit from this discovery and become the richest region in Brazil? Share your opinion in the comments! Until next time!

Pois é, seguramente vem os EUA e vai por as garras no petróleo. Senão, embargo econômico ou viraremos terroristas da vez. Como os EUA costumam dizer: “Estão contra os interesses”
