Inaugurated two years ago, the impressive bridge remains unused. Delays in access works and bureaucracies hinder its operation, frustrating expectations and causing incalculable economic losses. Will we finally see this promise become a reality in 2025?

Amid the stunning landscape that separates Brazil and Paraguay, a monumental work rises that should represent a milestone for the development of the trinational region.

The Integration Bridge, completed in 2022, remains unused, awaiting the completion of access works and customs facilities.

Meanwhile, the promise to alleviate traffic on the Friendship Bridge and boost the local economy remains only on paper. What prevents this structure from fulfilling its function and transforming the dynamics between the two countries?

Two years after its completion, the Integration Bridge remains closed to traffic, frustrating the expectations of residents, merchants, and authorities in the region.

According to the Ministry of Transport, the latest forecast is that the bridge will start operating in December 2025.

However, for that to happen, essential complementary works, such as the Eastern Perimeter on the Brazilian side and the Metropolitan Corridor del Este on the Paraguayan side, need to be completed.

This dependence on additional works has generated skepticism regarding the fulfillment of the promised deadlines.

The trinational region, comprising Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina, has been suffering for decades from the intense flow of vehicles on the Friendship International Bridge, inaugurated in 1965.

This structure connects Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, to Ciudad del Este, Paraguay, and is essential for trade and tourism between the two countries.

However, the volume of traffic has long exceeded its capacity, resulting in daily congestion that can exceed three hours of waiting.

The Integration Bridge was designed to alleviate this scenario, but its inauguration depends on actions that always seem to be delayed.

On the Brazilian side, the Eastern Perimeter is the main access work to the new bridge.

This highway, 14.7 km long, will also provide access to the Tancredo Neves Bridge, which connects Foz do Iguaçu to Argentina.

According to the Paraná Department of Highways (DER/PR), by December 2024, the work reached 52.95% completion.

With a layout that includes overpasses and strategic intersections, the Perimeter is considered vital for enabling the operation of the Integration Bridge.

The Paraná government estimates that the highway will be completed by the end of 2025, but the history of delays breeds distrust.

In Paraguay, the access works include the Metropolitan Corridor del Este, which will form a road ring over 30 km long, connecting several strategic highways to the Paraguayan side of the bridge.

The Paraguayan government expects the works to be delivered gradually throughout 2025, although some segments may extend until 2026.

The delay in completing these works prevents the Integration Bridge from being fully utilized, prolonging the economic and social losses for the region.

In addition to access works, another factor preventing the operation of the Integration Bridge is the lack of customs facilities.

These structures are essential for controlling goods and vehicles crossing the border.

According to Itaipu Binacional, responsible for financing the bridge and part of the complementary works, the necessary resources for constructing the customs facilities are secured.

However, the execution depends on a complex arrangement among different government bodies, which has delayed the project’s progress.

The economic impact of the delay in activating the Integration Bridge is significant.

Roni Temp, president of the Trinational Development Council (Codetri), highlighted that the delay directly affects regional and international trade, in addition to harming the quality of life for local residents.

According to him, the traffic jams on the Friendship Bridge generate additional costs for transporters and merchants, which could be minimized with the operation of the new bridge.

The Integration Bridge is seen as an opportunity to transform the logistics and economy of the trinational region.

With the capacity to handle cargo vehicle traffic, it will allow the Friendship Bridge to be primarily used for light vehicles and pedestrians, improving urban mobility and local commerce.

Moreover, the new bridge is expected to facilitate the transportation of goods between the countries, reducing costs and waiting times at the borders.

Despite the challenges, there are advances to be celebrated.

Since its completion, the Integration Bridge has become a symbol of regional integration, drawing attention to the need to improve infrastructure and logistics at the Brazil-Paraguay border.

With the promise of delivering complementary works by the end of 2025, residents and businesspeople in the region maintain hope that this structure will finally fulfill its purpose.

However, skepticism is inevitable. The history of delays and the complexity of the works involved make it hard to fully trust the established deadlines.

Meanwhile, the Integration Bridge remains a monument awaiting a future that seems ever distant.

Will the promise of regional integration become a reality, or will the trinational region continue to face the challenges of increasingly intense and disorganized traffic?

Do you believe that the Integration Bridge will finally be inaugurated in 2025, or will new obstacles delay this project again? Share your opinion in the comments!
