An elderly woman was greatly startled in Búzios after finding a 3-meter-long python weighing about 10 kg inside her home, hidden under the sofa. The incident occurred on Tuesday morning (7), in the Geribá neighborhood, in Armação dos Búzios, in the Lakes Region of Rio. The snake was spotted inside the property, in a condominium in the area, and the scare mobilized teams from the Environmental Guard.

The elderly woman’s startle upon finding the python in the house, in Búzios
As soon as the elderly woman noticed the animal inside her residence, she called for help. According to the City Hall of Búzios, the occurrence began when the lifeguard team was alerted. After that, the Environmental Guard went to the address to carry out the rescue. When the agents arrived, the snake was already contained in a trash container, which helped control the situation until it was safely removed.
The removal was carried out using appropriate techniques, without harming the animal and without putting the residents at risk. After removing the snake from the property, the team transferred the python to a suitable transport box.

The initial assessment indicated that it was an adult python, about 3 meters long and weighing nearly 10 kilograms.
The animal appeared to be healthy, and there were no reports of attacks on residents or pets. It was then taken to an environmental preservation area, where it was released.
How the snake was removed from under the sofa
The most striking point was precisely the place where the snake was: under the sofa, inside the house. It is the kind of scene that startles any family, especially when it involves an elderly person and a closed environment.
Even so, the quick response prevented the case from ending in an accident. In situations like this, the correct procedure makes all the difference, both to protect those in the property and to preserve the life of the wild animal.
Such cases are not as unlikely as many people imagine. According to the Butantan Institute, contact with wild animals in urban areas requires distance and immediate notification of the responsible authorities.
The institute’s guidance is straightforward: “The most important thing in this situation is to have the minimum possible interaction with the animal”. This recommendation applies to any species found inside the house, especially when there are children, elderly people, or pets present.
What to do upon seeing a giant python
The python is a non-venomous snake, but that does not mean that handling it can be done by residents. The size of the animal, its strength, and the stress of the situation increase the risk of defensive reactions.
Therefore, the guidance remains the same as given by the city hall: do not attempt to capture it on your own. The safest approach is to isolate the area, keep people and pets away, and call the municipal environmental team or another responsible agency.
In the case of Geribá, in Búzios, it was precisely this decision that prevented a bigger problem. The action of the Environmental Guard ensured the safety of the residents and allowed the python to be returned to nature unharmed.
The episode ends as a warning: when a snake appears inside the house, hidden under the sofa, the panic is understandable, but improvising is almost never the best solution. Information and quick response remain the safest path.
