Spain leads backlash against Elon Musk after accusations of political interference in Europe. Musk's controversial messages on X draw criticism from leaders over his influence, support for the far right and risks to democracy.
In recent months, Elon Musk has been a central figure in heated debates in Europe. Known for his innovations and controversial opinions, the billionaire has now been accused of interfering in European politics, sparking intense reactions from leaders across the continent. Spain, in particular, has been clear in condemning his actions and reinforcing that democracy cannot fall into the hands of billionaires with personal interests.
Elon Musk: From innovator to controversial figure in European politics
Elon Musk has always been admired for his revolutionary innovations, but his foray into European politics has raised questions. After Donald Trump's re-election, Musk used his social network, X, to attack leaders in Germany, France and the United Kingdom. In inflammatory messages, he accused politicians of covering up crimes and openly supported far-right parties such as Reform UK and the AfD in Germany.
His comments did not go unnoticed. Emmanuel Macron called this stance a “new international of reactionaries,” while other leaders stressed the risks of outside influence on democracy.

Spain's positioning
Spain reacted swiftly to Musk’s statements. Salvador Illa, president of the Generalitat of Catalonia, stressed that he will not allow the region’s name to be used to spread hate speech. According to him, “democracy cannot be at the mercy of technology billionaires allied with extremist movements.”
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez also spoke out, refuting any link between immigration and crime. Sanchez stressed that crime in the country has been steadily decreasing, regardless of the origin of the citizens.
Catalonia in the crosshairs of Musk's statements
Catalonia was one of the focuses of Musk's controversial messages. The billionaire reacted to a news story about convicted immigrants in the region, using it as an argument to criticize local policies. The response was blunt. Salvador Illa emphasized that the use of information out of context to fuel extremist speeches is unacceptable.
European Union and the limits for technology billionaires
The European Union also joined the discussion, highlighting the risks of digital interference. The Digital Services Act (DSA), implemented in 2023, was created precisely to combat abuses of digital platforms in political contexts.
Damian Boeselager, Germany's representative to the European Commission, stressed that if Musk uses his influence to support parties like the AfD, the EU need to act quickly. This includes sanctions to ensure that the rules are followed.
