The Startup HopfON Transforms Hop Waste from Beer Production into Panels and Materials for Construction.
The German beer production is famous worldwide and generates not only the beloved beverage but also an excess of hop waste. This waste, often discarded, is now getting a new life thanks to the startup HopfON. The company transforms hop waste into useful materials for construction, such as acoustic panels and thermal insulators, offering a sustainable alternative for the construction industry.
The Abundance of Waste Generated by Beer Production
In the Hallertau region, the largest hop growing area in the world, for every kilogram of hop used in beer production, about 3.5 kilograms of hop waste are discarded.
This means that only 20% of the hop is utilized, while the remaining is wasted.

Although some hop waste is used for biogas, a large part of hop waste still lacks a useful destination.
It was in light of this scenario that the startup HopfON found an innovative solution.
The Idea of Creating Construction Materials with Hop
The startup HopfON emerged after a conversation among students from the Technical University of Munich, who were inspired by the use of plant fibers, such as banana fiber, to create sustainable construction materials in Colombia.
The idea was simple: to use hop, a local plant, to create useful products. Thus, HopfON was born, utilizing hop waste to manufacture panels and other construction materials.
HopfON not only reuses hop waste but also promotes a circular economy model.
The company creates acoustic panels, structural materials, and thermal insulators from hop waste, transforming leaves, stems, and vines into new products.
Besides being an ecological solution for construction, HopfON also offers a modern and attractive design for its products, always seeking innovation and sustainability.
How HopfON Processes Hop Waste to Create Materials?
The process of creating materials begins with the collection of hop waste on farms.
The HopfON team collects the fresh material, dries it, and removes impurities. Then, the hop is chopped and processed with natural binding agents present in the plant.
This hop waste is then transformed into acoustic panels, thermal insulators, and other construction materials.
With this, HopfON offers an ecological and efficient solution, replacing conventional materials in construction.
