A Michigan Startup Is Set To Make Range A Lesser Issue For Electric Cars, And Developed A ‘Super Battery’ That Enabled A Tesla Model S To Reach 1,310 Km On A Single Charge
Range is still one of the main reasons why many people are afraid to buy electric cars. But what if there was a battery capable of delivering 1,310 km of range in an electric model the size of a Tesla Model S? This is the proposal from Michigan battery technology company Our Next Energy (ONE). Its test battery powered an electric model for 752 miles without recharging. The model, a Tesla Model S adapted with the company’s prototype battery, completed a road test in Michigan last December at an average speed of 55 mph.

According To ONE’s CEO And Founder, Mujeeb Ijaz, The Company Aims To Boost Electric Car Purchases By Eliminating Range Anxiety, Which Currently Inhibits Most Consumers.
Now The Company Is Focused On Evolving This Test Battery Into A Concept For A New Product Called Gemini, Which Will Allow Longer Trips On A Single Charge, Improving Safety And Cost, As Well As Using Sustainable Materials.
Simple Factors Cause Common Batteries To Lose 35% Efficiency In Electric Cars
According To The Company, Currently Marketed Electric Cars With More Range Do Not Have The Same Excess Energy That Is Needed To Overcome Factors Such As Driving At High Speeds, Hilly Terrain, Extreme Weather, Or Towing In Real Conditions.
These Factors Can Lead To A Loss Of Approximately 35% Of Total Range, Making Road Trips Less Enjoyable Than They Should Be. The CEO Also Highlighted That The New Battery, Tested In A Tesla Model S, Has The Solution To This Problem.
According To Ijaz, The ONE Gemini Battery Aims To Finally Eliminate Range As A Barrier To The Adoption Of Electric Cars, Doubling The Energy Offered Onboard Without Taking Up Too Much Space.
Company’s Batteries Could Hit The Market After 2023
According To The Company, The Battery Is Designed To Offer Enough Range For Each Consumer To Make An Electric Model Their Only Vehicle. Interestingly, The Company Installed Its 207.3 kWh Battery In The Same Space As The 103.9 kWh Battery Of The Tesla Model S, Meaning Much More Energy Density, While The Mileage Consumption In Miles Per kWh Is About The Same As The Original Battery.
The Prototype Package Used In The Demonstration Featured Different Cells, Including High Capacity Nickel Cells. However, The Cells Used In The Production Battery Are Still In Development. It Is Worth Noting That The Michigan-Based Company Plans To Put The Battery Into Production After Next Year.
