Erling Haaland buys the most expensive book in Norway, donates rare copy to the Bryne library and launches reading challenge for youth

Erling Haaland, striker for Manchester City and the Norway national team, purchased for 1.3 million Norwegian kroner, nearly R$ 700 thousand, the most expensive book in the country and donated it to the Bryne library, in Time, to encourage reading among young people.

Donation brings rare work to local library

Haaland acquired Heimskringla, known as The Saga of Kings, along with his father, Alfie, a former football player. After the purchase, he decided to return the only known copy of this edition to his hometown.

The donation was made to the municipality of Time with one condition: the book must be displayed and accessible to the public in the local library. The idea is that the work should not remain stored away but can be appreciated by readers.

Book brings together history, mythology, and Viking identity

Written by Snorri Sturluson, Heimskringla narrates the history of Viking kings up to the 13th century. The work combines historical and mythological elements by portraying kings, queens, warriors, political disputes, battles, and alliances.

The text addresses the unification of the kingdom and the Christianization. Additionally, it preserves customs and values of Viking culture, serving as a source on the history and identity of Scandinavia.

Haaland connects reading to his own roots

In explaining his decision, Haaland said he wants the book open so that people can read about those who came from Bryne and Jæren.

For him, reading sparks more interest when the reader recognizes themselves in the stories.

The player also stated that he has been fortunate to live his dream in football, but not everyone will have the same chance.

Therefore, he argued that books allow for big dreams, to see new possibilities, and to find one’s own path.

Competition will reward classes with trip

In addition to the donation, Haaland proposed the creation of a reading competition in the municipality. The expectation is that the contest will start in the 2026/2027 school year and involve elementary and high school students from Time.

The classes that read the most will win a trip to watch a match at the Ullevaal Stadium in Oslo, alongside Haaland and the Norwegian national team.

The schools in the municipality will be responsible for organizing the competition.

Municipality highlights impact for youth

Mayor Andreas Vollsund thanked for the gift and stated that the initiative creates an opportunity to awaken the joy of reading among young people.

Alfie Haaland recalled that the family’s roots are in the region and in Snorri’s sagas.
