Sale Includes Parts, Technical Support, and Armaments for the Fleet of Six Aircraft of the Lebanese Air Force
The U.S. Closes $100 Million Deal with Lebanon for Maintenance and Modernization of A-29 Super Tucano Fighters. The package was approved by the State Department and involves replacement parts, technical support, and weapon systems intended for the Lebanese fleet.
The sale, authorized last Friday, is part of the Foreign Military Financing (FMF) program, which provides resources to allied countries for the acquisition of military equipment manufactured in the United States. The contract includes support for engines, CAD/PAD devices, upgrades to the aircraft structures, and logistical support on the ground.
Strategic Maintenance and Regional Reinforcement

The six A-29 aircraft of Lebanon were delivered between 2017 and 2018. The new agreement aims to ensure the full operation of the fleet, which carries out close air support, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions in the context of regional tensions.

According to the State Department, the investment will strengthen the Lebanese Air Force’s capacity to enforce the ceasefire that has been in place since November 2024. The aircraft are used in ground maneuvers and border patrols.
Embraer and Sierra Nevada Lead the Contract
Sierra Nevada Corporation, in partnership with the Brazilian Embraer, will be primarily responsible for the aircraft maintenance. The production of the A-29 happens at the American company’s facility in Florida. It is not yet confirmed whether the values will remain unchanged or be adjusted during the final negotiations.
In the past, Lebanon considered expanding the fleet to 12 units, but plans did not progress. The former commander of the Lebanese Air Force, Brigadier General Ziad Haykal, pointed out in 2019 that the A-29 is the only aircraft in the fleet with real light combat, counterinsurgency, and rapid arms transport capabilities.
U.S. Military Support Goes Beyond the A-29

In addition to the Super Tucanos, Lebanon has already received MD-530F+ helicopters and Protector-class patrol vessels from the United States. These donations have increased the operational capacity of the Lebanese Armed Forces, which traditionally operate with older equipment.
In January, the Trump administration suspended $95 million in aid via FMF, but the funds were released in March. It is still unclear whether the new maintenance sale will be fully funded by this assistance.
In your opinion, does this investment strengthen Lebanon’s stability or deepen its military dependence on the U.S.?

O super Tucano não é avião brasileiro?!
