Oldest Automaker in China Bets on Flex Technology and High-End Cars to Conquer the Brazilian Market.

FAW, the oldest automaker in China, is eyeing the Brazilian market and preparing to start operations in the country. Founded in 1953 and responsible for manufacturing the official cars of Chinese presidents, including Xi Jinping himself, the company aims to bring two of its brands: Bestune, aimed at the general public, and Hongqi, focused on luxury vehicles.

FAW’s Strategy to Cater to the Brazilian Audience

During the 2025 Auto Show, FAW representatives were seen at the Comexport booth, the company responsible for vehicle import logistics. According to information from the Autoesporte portal, Comexport acquired the former Ford/Troller factory in Horizonte (CE), raising the possibility of a future agreement for the production or assembly of FAW cars in Brazil.

The automaker is awaiting the development of flex technology for its models, as the Brazilian market has a strong preference for vehicles that run on both gasoline and ethanol. This adaptation is considered essential for FAW’s success in the country.

FAW’s Weight in the Global Market

FAW is a Chinese automaker looking to sell cars in Brazil, bringing luxury and popular models. They are waiting to adapt the engines to run on ethanol, which is widely used here.

In China, FAW is a true powerhouse. In addition to its own brands, such as Bestune, Hongqi, and Jiefang (specializing in trucks), the company has solid partnerships with major global automakers, including Volkswagen, Audi, and Toyota. According to data released in 2024, its brands sold over 1.5 million vehicles, demonstrating the strength and tradition of the manufacturer in the Chinese market.

Expectations for FAW’s Operation in Brazil

Despite the interest and initial movements, there is still no official date for the start of FAW car sales in Brazil. The automaker continues to study the market and the feasibility of producing locally or importing the first batches. In any case, the expectation is high, especially due to the potential to bring affordable luxury models and updated technology, as has been happening with other Chinese brands that have arrived here in recent years.
