New Proconve L8 Law Decrees The End Of Cars From Chevrolet, Hyundai, And Toyota. Brands Pull Models Due To Pollution. Find Out Which Cars Have Been Discontinued In 2025!
The eighth phase of the Vehicle Air Pollution Control Program (Proconve L8), which has been in effect since January 1, 2025, in Brazil, is already causing several changes in the automotive sector. Since last year, automakers have been adapting to the new law and, of course, the subsequent laws that will tighten emission standards even further in the coming years. As a result, dozens of cars have been discontinued by Chevrolet, Hyundai, and Toyota due to Proconve L8.
Understand Why Chevrolet, Hyundai, And Toyota Are Not Adjusting Their Vehicles To Comply With The New Law
Solutions to comply with the new law vary, and the most extreme is removing Chevrolet, Hyundai, and Toyota cars from their lineups. However, similar to the seventh phase (L7), this one has also forced some automakers to permanently remove cars from circulation. It is also not possible to simply modify discontinued cars to make them sellable.
One of the reasons is that the production of these Chevrolet, Hyundai, and Toyota cars may have already ceased or is nearing the end of their generation. Consequently, the manufacturer shortens their market lifespan. Other cars the brands deem not worth the investment for engine adaptation, which often is outdated and has very few units in circulation.

One example of a car that has been discontinued due to the new Proconve L8 law is the first-generation Creta. The model lasted as long as it could but has been permanently discontinued. The compact SUV with the old 1.6 flex aspirated engine is no longer offered.
Some Of The Cars That Have Been Discontinued Due To The New Law With Proconve L8
Hyundai had already replaced the 1.0 turbo engine in the second generation of the Creta and has now maintained it in the facelift, albeit with modifications for Proconve L8. Another change is that the current Creta no longer offers the 2.0 flex aspirated engine in the top trim. It has been replaced by a new 1.6 turbo, with nearly 200 hp.
Among the other cars that have been discontinued are the Citroën C4 Cactus, a compact SUV that left Brazil at the end of last year.
In addition to making room for new products on the assembly line in Porto Real (RJ), Citroën is retiring the veteran engines 1.6 EC5 (flex aspirated), of up to 118 hp, and the famous 1.6 THP (turboflex), which generated up to 173 hp. These would need modifications to comply with Proconv L8.
The Toyota Yaris, with the imminent arrival of the Yaris Cross and the non-compliance of the 1.5 flex aspirated engine, of up to 110 hp, with the new regulations, has been discontinued. Toyota has already made the final decision regarding the sedan, which no longer has new units leaving the factory. It remains to be seen what will happen to the hatch, which is expected to follow the same path soon.
Japanese Suzuki And Mitsubishi L200
In addition to the Chevrolet, Hyundai, and Toyota cars that have been discontinued due to Proconve L8, the charming Japanese SUV Suzuki Jimny may be facing its final days, both here and in Europe, due to its 1.5 flex aspirated gasoline engine of 108 hp.
The units need adjustments to comply with the program. Otherwise, it will have to be discontinued. The Jimny costs around R$ 150 thousand, with 4×4 drive and a five-speed manual transmission.
The medium pickup Mitsubishi L200, which already has a new generation for sale in Brazil and is now called Triton, has had its end confirmed across all versions. This is because the 2.4 turbodiesel has been replaced by a new engine, but this will be imported. The brand will also close its engine factory in Catalão (GO).
