Test On Dirt Road Reveals Unexpected Performance Of Iconic Volkswagen Hatch Compared To The Competition Model Used In The Brazilian Rally Championship.
A rare and historic experience was recorded in Brazil in September 1989. The Volkswagen Gol GTI, launched that year with a 2.0 engine and electronic fuel injection, was put to the test on a dirt stretch and compared to the 1.6 model specially prepared for rallying. The test featured none other than Reinaldo Varela, Brazilian rally champion, who did not hide his surprise at the performance of the street model under extreme conditions.
The technical assessment revealed more than just a simple automotive curiosity — it showcased the potential of the Gol GTI even off the asphalt, revealing mechanical details, adjustments, and real data that help explain why the car became a symbol of the Brazilian industry.
Driver Tests The GTI On Dirt And Points Out Positive Performance
During a segment of the Intelbrás Rally of 1989, Varela, who was already leading the national championship at the time, drove the original Gol GTI on a dirt road in the city of Pirapora, São Paulo.

According to the driver, the performance of the GTI exceeded expectations, even in an environment for which it was not originally designed. The 2.0-liter engine with 120 horsepower showed strength and good responsiveness, although with torque at low revs considered limited for rally competition use.
Nevertheless, Varela made it clear: “I was positively impressed. If the regulations change and allow 2.0-liter engines, I want one of those.”
Comparison With The Gol 1.6 Of Rally Reveals Surprises
In the same month that the test took place, the Gol 1.6 specially prepared for rallying competed in the 4th stage of the South American championship in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina.
Equipped with a crown and pinion ratio reduced to 9.41:1 and short gears, the competition model finished in second place in the stage. The winner, also aboard a Gol, was the duo Fuchter and Costa.
Despite the difference in preparation, the Gol GTI showed performance figures very close to the official rally model. With acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.8 seconds and a top speed of 184 km/h, it managed to keep pace, according to Varela’s own assessment.
Suspension And Engine Highlight The Qualities Of The GTI On Dirt
The competition car used reinforced suspension, maintaining the monocoque structure, a feature praised by Varela. The handling in low-speed corners and traction on steep climbs were strong points of the GTI, which, even without modifications, handled the course well.
On the other hand, the rally model took advantage in tight sections and used the suspension as a differentiating factor, in addition to its lightness and preparation aimed at uneven surfaces. Still, the GTI remained competitive and surprising.
Technical Table Reinforces Comparison Between Versions
| Feature | Gol 1.6 Rally | Gol GTI Street |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | 1.6 AP, prepared | 2.0 AP, original |
| Power | About 100 hp | 120 hp |
| 0 to 100 km/h | Slightly higher | 9.8 seconds |
| Top Speed | 190 km/h (estimated) | 184 km/h |
| Transmission | Shortened ratios | Factory original |
| Suspension | Reinforced for rally | Original |
1989 Event Enters The History Of Brazilian Motorsport
The rare opportunity to compare the sports model from the production line with a competition car highlighted the versatility of the Gol, which was already a commercial success at the time. The GTI was the first national car with electronic fuel injection and ushered in a new phase in the domestic market.
Officially launched in 1988 and with sales starting in early 1989, the GTI quickly became a benchmark for performance and innovation, marking an era in the Brazilian automotive industry.
The event in Pirapora, which occurred shortly after the rally stage in Florianópolis, brought a realistic and honest assessment of the model’s potential outside its comfort zone, something rarely documented with such detail.
Repercussions Of The Test And Impact On Volkswagen
The success of the GTI in this improvised test served as natural advertising for Volkswagen, which saw the model as a technological showcase. The ability to competently handle dirt further increased the hatch’s prestige among young people, especially speed enthusiasts.
Although the factory never developed an official rally version with the 2.0 engine, the 1989 episode fueled speculation and inspired independent preparers across Brazil in the following years.
Can The Gol GTI Return To The Trails?
The possibility of revisiting the concept of the Gol GTI on off-road terrains depends on changes in technical regulations. If 2.0 engines are allowed for entry-level rally categories, experts point out that a modern reinterpretation could leverage the successful base of the original model.
Meanwhile, the 1989 Gol GTI continues to be celebrated as a landmark of national technology, remembered not only for its design and performance on the streets but also for its unlikely performance on trails and unplanned competitions.
If competitions today allowed a model like this, with current advancements, would it have real chances of dominating again? What do you think: is it worth investing in a new generation for trails or keeping the GTI as a street legend?
